It&#8217;s intended to help out a very specific segment of one-time visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s time for another installment of &#8220;Help the Kids with their Homework.&#8221;\u2122 The question I keep seeing likely derives from a mathematics assignment, but it also has a nice geography twist. It&#8217;s been all-the-rage according to my website access logs the last few days. I was curious about it myself so I gladly researched a plausible answer. Hopefully I can walk through the steps and provide a solution before the homework needs to be turned in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many feet is Interstate 20?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d27626603.804850962!2d-91.951134!3d32.301424!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x86e543a354e95305%3A0x291282d77fc3838c!2sBalmorhea%20Independent%20School%20District%2C%20Texas!3m2!1d31.151450599999997!2d-103.82162609999999!4m5!1s0x8855641aef670b73%3A0xbdb186aea219a81c!2sState%20Rd%20S-21-1060%2C%20Florence%2C%20SC%2029501!3m2!1d34.185811!2d-79.8418477!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1660046683750!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interstate 20 runs from just east of Kent, Texas across the Southeastern United States all the way to Florence, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of places where one might begin to figure this out. I started with statistics provided by the U.S. Government&#8217;s Federal Highway Administration, a part of the Department of Transportation. They&#8217;ve compiled the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/reports\/routefinder\/table1.cfm\">FHWA Route Log and Finder List<\/a> which records the total distance of Interstate 20 as 1,539.38 miles. Their figure also includes &#8220;overlap miles&#8221; which are stretches of road that are shared by two or more Interstate highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to count the overlap miles since a driver would cover them if she drove the entire distance from Kent to Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major map websites might be another source but I stuck with the FHWA because it&#8217;s probably more reliable and definitive. The map I&#8217;ve prepared looks great but it does provide a slightly different answer than the U.S. Government: 1,534 miles. Sure, both sources provide answers that are really close but it seemed the answer required precision or it wouldn&#8217;t have demanded a measurement in feet. I don&#8217;t know. Maybe I&#8217;m over-thinking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One mile equals 5,280 feet so the answer can be reduced to a simple mathematical equation: 5,280 feet\/mile X 1,539.38 miles = 8,127,926.4 feet. This can be calculated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=feet+per+mile&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hs=QGF&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&amp;q=1%2C539.38+miles+to+feet&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;gs_rfai=&amp;pbx=1&amp;fp=9a951961ff9ba31d\">directly within the Google Toolbar<\/a>. It also equals: 2,477 kilometres; 1,455,748 <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1916\">smoots<\/a>; 1.0946 \u00d7 10<sup>9<\/sup> <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1916\">potrzebies<\/a>; or 12,315 furlongs. I love that Google calculator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days ago I got a comment on the site from a student in Australia that went like this: &#8220;<em>Thanks i cheated from your site for my school homework answers!!!<\/em>&#8221; That&#8217;s not my intent.
