{"id":6130,"date":"2010-10-05T19:19:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T00:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=6130"},"modified":"2022-02-06T08:18:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T13:18:13","slug":"worst-state-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/worst-state-capital\/","title":{"rendered":"Bakersfield:  A Better California Capital?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We had a lot of fun and some great comments during <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=6106\">the discussion of state capitals<\/a> most inconvenient to the residents of the states&#8217; largest cities. I mentioned that I&#8217;d found the U.S. Census Bureau&#8217;s list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/geographies\/reference-files\/2010\/geo\/2010-centers-population.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Population Centers by State<\/a> from the year 2000 census. Naturally I took the last two questions from the previous exercise and modified them to compare the state capitals with the state centers of population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dropping the latitude \/ longitude coordinates into Google Maps almost always produced a street address. From there it was easy to generate directions and mileage to the respective state capitals. Here&#8217;s an example for Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m28!1m12!1m3!1d391964.3467301548!2d-83.58584926096326!3d39.86927705681941!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x883f537ab48ab3af%3A0x99185b226a49865e!2sHarmony%20Township%2C%20Ohio!3m2!1d39.9081903!2d-83.6135572!4m5!1s0x883889c1b990de71%3A0xe43266f8cfb1b533!2sColumbus%2C%20Ohio!3m2!1d39.961175499999996!2d-82.99879419999999!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1603224771132!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I probably could have could have produced even more accurate results. I received a number of fascinating suggestions. However I had to go with what was both easily available and conveniently calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were&#8230; boringly similar. Juneau is still incredibly distant from the center of population in Alaska (which <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Q9Zx3tLdNR9GPpxx9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">barely nudges away from Anchorage<\/a> by the way). Sacramento is still incredibly inconvenient for tens of millions of California residents, and is by far the worst location for a state capital from an overall societal perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-florida-difference\">The Florida Difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d3568376.514471501!2d-82.918223!3d29.142779000000004!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x88dd11fbe56ec5e9%3A0x98386875877a5c60!2sLakeland%2C%20FL%2C%20Florida!3m2!1d27.8617347!2d-81.6911559!4m5!1s0x88ec8a5187124b53%3A0xebee077ad4fdb1f8!2sTallahassee%2C%20Florida!3m2!1d30.438255899999998!2d-84.28073289999999!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1603224857678!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was only one major difference: Florida. This was noted in a comment by reader &#8220;Matt&#8221; about ten minutes after I&#8217;d dropped the lat\/long in Google maps and noticed the same thing. Matt gets the gold star for amazing coincidences. He should go play the lotto this evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacksonville, on Florida&#8217;s northeast corner is the state&#8217;s largest city. However, think of all the major cities further south: Tampa; St. Petersburg; Orlando; Ft. Lauderdale; Miami; and dozens of smaller yet still significant communities that line the coasts. Jacksonville may be the largest city but the center of population falls much further south, <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dr3dJddpfgwB5FJE6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even south of Orlando<\/a>, and that&#8217;s quite distant from the capital at Tallahassee. This pushes Florida into the number 2 position for overall state capital inconvenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"improvements\">Improvements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/the_photographer\/5626008694\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5182\/5626008694_16cb5f83f0_b.jpg\" alt=\"bakersfield, ca. Photo by Paul Narvaez; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Maybe right around here?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Better state capital choices for the five most inconveniently misaligned locations are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bakersfield, California<\/li><li>Winter Haven, Florida<\/li><li>Middletown, New York<\/li><li>Joliet, Illinois<\/li><li>Killeen, Texas<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and Juneau, Alaska is still an outrageously inconvenient place although it doesn&#8217;t impact nearly as many people as the others. I&#8217;m not knocking Juneau as a town. <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22423\">I&#8217;ve been there a couple of times<\/a> and I think it&#8217;s a nice place. It&#8217;s still a really poor choice for a capital city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"maximum-convenience\">Maximum Convenience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are there any bets on the most conveniently-located state capital with respect to the center of population? I was thinking it would probably be one of the really small states or one of those that seem to sit at dead center. The &#8220;best&#8221; one is neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m27!1m12!1m3!1d22838.022678460937!2d-69.7656860702075!3d44.315031469261164!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m12!3e0!4m5!1s0x4cb200fdafacc49d%3A0x79a3488d64220b2d!2sAugusta%2C%20Maine%2004330!3m2!1d44.3106241!2d-69.7794897!4m4!2s44.314428%2C%20-69.716594!3m2!1d44.314428!2d-69.716594!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1603225256149!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maine&#8217;s center of population is only three-ish miles away from its capital city of Augusta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"totally-unrelated\">Totally Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit late (I kept forgetting to post it), but you should absolutely read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datapointed.net\/2010\/10\/the-farthest-place-from-mcdonalds-lower-48-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Visit To The McFarthest Spot<\/a> on Data Pointed if you haven&#8217;t seen it yet. A personal visit to a noteworthy geo-oddity gains top marks in my estimation. I would have loved to have accomplished something of the magnitude described in that post.
