Practitioners called it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newurbanism.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Urbanism<\/a>&#8220;. Organizations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congress for the New Urbanism<\/a> began to promote its hallmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lizstless\/6094525336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/6073\/6094525336_4bb6fb7121_b.jpg\" alt=\"Celebration, Florida, Downtown. Photo by Rick Webb; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Downtown Celebration, Florida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the features typical of this design (very generally) might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Neighborhoods with a diversity of housing, building types and people<\/li><li>Interconnected and relatively narrow streets<\/li><li>Abundant and nearby recreational and open space<\/li><li>Automobile parking hidden behind buildings<\/li><li>Convenient access to public transportation<\/li><li>Nearby perimeter shops and businesses that cater to a majority of basic needs<\/li><li>An emphasis on walkability in general.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many features designed to be within close walking distance and with a de-emphasis on automobile transportation, communities subscribing to New Urbanism also promote environmental stewardship and healthy lifestyles as an attractive byproduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, these new communities leave distinctive footprints upon the surrounding terrain because of their design features. The following images provide some representative samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seaside, Florida, USA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d5632.368322362919!2d-86.14400012661292!3d30.32263397712759!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8893e4e34d131d19%3A0x1b3d5a5e81bb9d58!2sSeaside%2C%20FL%2032459!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615810040332!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seasidefl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seaside<\/a> gave birth to the New Urbanism movement. It is an unincorporated town along the Florida panhandle that caters to both residents and vacationers. Notice the latticed network of streets and the clearly defined center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kentlands, Maryland, USA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d10124.626924759232!2d-77.236161!3d39.119506!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615810272740!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentlands.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kentlands<\/a>, part of a Maryland suburb of the District of Columbia, became another early proponent. It is one of the largest New Urbanist communities in existence, with more than 8,000 residents when combined with its companion community, Lakelands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebration, Florida, USA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d5744.047947843797!2d-81.540506!3d28.320003!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615810360112!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/celebrationtowncenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Celebration<\/a> is perhaps known best for its development by the Walt Disney Company and it rests conveniently right outside of Disney World in central Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Garrison Green, Alberta, Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d4106.03395682744!2d-114.12411!3d51.003291!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615810441052!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the movement originated within the United States, it has spread to other countries too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatewaygarrisongreen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garrison Green<\/a> an 80-acre site in Calgary, Alberta, Canada involves the redevelopment of a former military base that outlived its usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Midland, Western Australia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d2769.984019396742!2d115.9995!3d-31.893108!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615810559035!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, New Urbanist designs have circled the globe. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midland,_Western_Australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Midland<\/a>, near Perth, in Western Australia is undergoing an extensive redevelopment on a grand scale through the efforts of the Midland Redevelopment Authority. This satellite image shows construction underway, with new streets being laid out in an interlocking pattern.
