Arapahoe County possessed multiple exclaves fully enclosed within the boundaries of Denver City\/County, Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denver had to find a way to grow as people moved into the area. So they found an easy solution. They simply annexed land from their neighboring counties wherever necessary and possible. Denver succeeded in their expansionist strategy most of the time but not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d786417.9166556377!2d-104.9408623089925!3d39.65095261489742!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x876c5e49bd3b8a0d%3A0x9a761e37e4be787e!2sArapahoe%20County%2C%20CO!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1616357106735!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small parcels of Arapahoe County territory escaped annexation into Denver, but at an unusual cost. They became stranded. They are totally isolated and physically separated from the rest of Arapahoe County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Glendale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The larger exclave defines the boundaries of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glendale.co.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Glendale<\/a>, a 0.6 square mile (1.4 sq. km.) tract with a population of about 4,500. There is also a second, much smaller triangular parcel nearby that doesn\u2019t seem to house much of anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8842331933\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7445\/8842331933_57cbcae0e6_b.jpg\" alt=\"Municipal Center in the Glendale, Colorado exclave. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I discovered that it\u2019s really easy to drive to Glendale. However, it was a bit more difficult to determine when I\u2019d actually arrived officially within its borders. I saw no signage announcing any crossings into Arapahoe County. On the other hand, Glendale itself was entirely indistinguishable from surrounding Denver. You would absolutely not be able to determine that you\u2019d encountered anything unusual geographically unless you knew about this anomaly in advance. Glendale blends in seamlessly with Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Municipal Center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally I researched and calculated the boundaries with painstaking precision ahead of time. Then I programed my destinations into a portable GPS. I figured, logically, that I&#8217;d find the Glendale Municipal Center within Glendale proper. That seemed like the safest of bets. After all, who would have the audacity to locate Glendale\u2019s center of government outside of its boundaries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maps agreed and I set off on the most direct route to this specific destination. I arrived without difficulties and I took a photograph with my crappy mobile phone camera to document my achievement for posterity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Public Park<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8842953466\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2820\/8842953466_e6cb229830_b.jpg\" alt=\"Public park in the Glendale, Colorado exclave. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That wasn\u2019t enough. I wanted to experience all 0.6 square miles of this glorious anomaly. I\u2019d researched a spot unquestionably within the heart of the oddity where I knew I could also find parking without any problems (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ADkc9DqGUc22o5wc9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">special thanks to Google Street View<\/a>). So I found myself at a place called Creekside Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to operate quickly. A thunderstorm loomed on the horizon with amazing cloud-to-ground lightning strikes like one only sees out here in the West. People stared at me like I was half-crazed. There I stood in the middle of the parking lot, thunderstorm looming, car running, door wide open, snapping rapid-fire photos of some random park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that all of you understand this fascination of mine. Unfortunately it&#8217;s not well understood by the public at large. But I captured my geo-oddity and I called it a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Totally Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I read &#8220;USA Today&#8221; about twice a year, usually when it&#8217;s been left at the door of my hotel room as has been the case all this week. It had an article a couple of days ago &#8212; and fortunately it&#8217;s still online &#8212; that talks about a United States interstate highway signed entirely in the metric system: <a href=\"https:\/\/usatoday30.usatoday.com\/news\/nation\/2010-06-07-kilometers_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I-19 is in midst of metric muddle<\/a>. Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and here&#8217;s something I stumbled across from a different source about <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.boston.com\/news\/nation\/articles\/2010\/12\/13\/colombian_con_man_gets_15_months_in_border_case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a con man caught sneaking across the border<\/a> in Vermont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wish I had more time to explore these topics but unfortunately my work and travel plans have made that impossible this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve kept my eye on a certain set of geo-oddities for a long time.
