Really, that&#8217;s not so odd. One should expect that with a blog called Twelve Mile Circle. The number of places designated Twelve Mile <em>something-or-another<\/em> that turn up in these queries amazes me. Sometimes I even feature them on these pages. You&#8217;ll probably recall <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2976\">Twelve Mile House<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=78\">Twelve Mile Indiana<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About a Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve started getting queries for Twelve Mile Lake in Iowa, or variations on that theme, for the last several weeks. It&#8217;s not a huge volume but just enough for me to notice in the background. So I decided to explore it some more. I discovered that it&#8217;s located in the southwestern portion of the state about four miles east of Creston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/davidwilson1949\/37811277192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4481\/37811277192_519c2a4469_b.jpg\" alt=\"20160614 182 Creston, Iowa. Photo by David Wilson; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Downtown Creston, Iowa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems rather similar to thousands of other artificially-constructed reservoirs spread throughout the heartland. Fishermen come here in search of channel catfish, walleye, crappie, bluegill, and bass. There are something like thirty fishing tournaments held at Twelve Mile Lake each summer. Hunters come here in-season for whitetail deer, duck, geese, turkey and pheasant. The surrounding park land has a number of amenities for people wishing to get a little taste of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d44239.94635212271!2d-94.30514656195646!3d41.07303527481387!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x87eb85036e610f21%3A0x8b7ccda292209344!2sTwelve%20Mile%20Lake!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1640461684532!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve Mile Lake gets its name from Twelve Mile Creek, which the state plugged-up to create the reservoir. It&#8217;s a companion water source to nearby Three Mile Lake just to the east, which got its name from Three Mile Creek in similar fashion. Apparently they weren&#8217;t too inventive with their names. So the question remains, what the &#8220;miles&#8221; in their titles represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mormon Connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out that they both connect historically to the Latter Day Saints &#8212; the Mormons. Adherents established a way station in the vicinity long ago. Here they remained for several years on their epic journey between Nauvoo, Illinois and their final destination in Salt Lake City, Utah. They called their semi-permanent settlement Mount Pisgah. <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Pisgah,_Iowa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As described in Wikipedia<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;After the 1844 death of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, most members of the Church aligned themselves with Brigham Young and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Under Young&#8217;s leadership, about 13,000 Mormon citizens of Nauvoo, Illinois set out to find a new home in the West. On May 18, 1846, Nauvoo exiles established a permanent camp and resting place on the middle fork (Twelve-Mile Creek) of the Grand River on Potawatomi Indian land. The site was selected and named Mount Pisgah by LDS apostle Parley P. Pratt, who, when he first saw the modest hill was reminded of the biblical Pisgah (Deuteronomy 3:27) where Moses viewed the Promised Land.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From what I&#8217;ve been able to discover from a variety of sources, the distances assigned to both creeks were reference points related to the period of Mormon occupation during the mid-Nineteenth Century. Thus they have a direct connection to the very early history of the Later Day Saints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story went from bland to historic instantaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Totally Unrelated Topic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3946\">odd stretch of New York highway<\/a> extending into the territory of neighboring Connecticut? Steve of <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctmq.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Connecticut Museum Quest<\/a> has visited that spot and he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctmuseumquest.com\/?page_id=9839\">posted an article<\/a> about it on his website.
