However, it did produce a couple of positive results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, remember when I mentioned those <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3363\">newly-available images<\/a> previously? They let me take a step back and wax nostalgic on some of my older articles. They&#8217;re history now but they were current events back then and fun at the time. I wondered as I read through them, &#8220;where are they now?&#8221; One of those involved <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=736\">the border dispute<\/a> between Bibb and Monroe Counties in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking Another Look<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jstephenconn\/3002008251\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3284\/3002008251_15af0056b1_o.jpg\" alt=\"Pro Bass Shop's Outdoor World. Photo by J. Stephen Conn; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I hadn\u2019t thought about the situation in Bibb and Monroe Counties since I posted the original article. January 2009 seems so long ago now. The disagreement was &#8212; as I noted at the time &#8212; more than academic. The winner would get about $1.3 million in annual tax revenue from a giant Bass Pro Shop. Plus, another 400 parcels of land would come with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d5537.481575999684!2d-83.738004!3d32.933837!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x0%3A0x5fed4941b73c5440!2sBass%20Pro%20Shops!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1580425421950!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s 125,000 square feet of retail space and up to a thousand jobs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Like a Soap Opera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought they would have resolved the issue by now but I was wrong. The Governor appointed a surveyor and the two sides were going to work it out. However, fireworks erupted when the Governor\u2019s designated surveyor filed his report. He concluded that the northeast corner was off by about 800 feet where it met the Ocmulgee River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bibb County would have found itself on the losing end of that proposition. They\u2019d already invested heavily in infrastructure improvements for the Bass Fish Pro facility. So, no surprise, it expressed great displeasure with the results. The survey proposed to cut through that property and lop-off a swath of Bibb County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, Bibb County filed a protest. It argued that the old boundary should stand because it\u2019s been a commonly-understood marker for more than a century. Moving the border would also create the inconvenience of a small exclave of Bibb County located within Monroe County, a single property appended onto Bibb by state law in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I don\u2019t have a dog in this fight. I most assuredly don\u2019t pretend to know all the facts either. However, there seems to be a bit of &#8220;blame the messenger&#8221; going on here. Bibb County hasn\u2019t paid the surveyor for its half of the survey fee. The county also called for a legal deposition. So the surveyor responded in a decidedly 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century fashion with a pretty slick website called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bibb Monroe Battle<\/span> [<em>link no longer works<\/em>] that explains the situation from his perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things move slowly when it involves territorial possession.
