It portrays the significance of and reflection of maps upon culture, exploration, discovery, and the world around us. Thus, the festival incorporates the physical display of maps along with lectures, seminars and films. These combine to create a better appreciation of the field of cartography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the companion efforts is an accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalofmaps.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Festival of Maps Blog<\/a>. It covers a variety of topics and breaking news related to the festival. Recently they provided an update on a topic of specific interest to me, <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalofmaps.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/open-borders.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maps of the Civil War<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Scott-anaconda.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/bc\/Scott-anaconda.jpg\/512px-Scott-anaconda.jpg\" alt=\"Scott-anaconda. Elliott \/ Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chicago&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Field Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newberry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newberry Library<\/a> have combined efforts (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/XT1NYbAyjynBRgC97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). They formed under the umbrella of the Festival to create the exhibit &#8220;Maps: Finding Our Place in the World.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will display, with relevant context, more than 130 of the most famous, significant and valuable maps in the world. They&#8217;ve billed it as&#8221;the most ambitious cartography exhibit ever in North America&#8221;.
