Of course I&#8217;ll add more information to the permanent pages of my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/\">Travel Adventures<\/a> site over the coming weeks. In the meantime, I wanted to give you (my regular blog readers), a sneak peek at things to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8914987869\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7346\/8914987869_1af3dda19a_b.jpg\" alt=\"Charleston, South Carolina historic district. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aficionados of architecture love the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charleston_Historic_District\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charleston historic district<\/a>. I did too, and I enjoyed wandering amongst early American homes along cobblestone drives. These well-preserved structures exist block-after-block on the roads radiating up from the waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Civil War History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8871468976\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2840\/8871468976_9b4fb0ced3_b.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Charleston played a prominent role in United States history. Just one example, Fort Sumter, marked the opening salvo of the American Civil War. The U.S. Army built the fort atop a man-made island in Charleston harbor as part of a coastal defense system. Today, tour boats take visitors to this sight throughout the day. What surprised me the most was its size. The island is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21872\">See the completed entry on Ft. Sumter<\/a>, with photos and video.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Naval History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8914991953\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2821\/8914991953_d12967f1b7_b.jpg\" alt=\"The retired aircraft carrier USS Yorktown moored at Patriots Point, South Carolina. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The USS Yorktown aircraft carrier served during the Second World War and into the postwar era. It is now a floating museum anchored along <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patriotspoint.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patriots Point<\/a> on the opposite side of the Cooper River from Charleston. I took this photo from the top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Ravenel_Jr._Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arthur Ravenel Bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting to the top of the bridge was easy since the builders conveniently included a wide pedestrian\/biking path in their design. Also, hiking across the bridge has become a popular activity in the few years since it opened, and the views are spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23497\">See the completed entry on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point<\/a>, with photos and video.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8915596188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8535\/8915596188_f7cc77d5a6_b.jpg\" alt=\"Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, South Carolina. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the Sullivans Island Lighthouse, one of the stranger looking lighthouses I&#8217;ve seen. Expect this one to appear on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/lighthouse.html\">Lighthouse Collection<\/a> page.
