Anything out-of-the-ordinary will jump to the forefront. It may be an odd shape like the perfect circle of <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2355\">Corona<\/a>, a stranded bit of land like <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=26\">Carter Lake<\/a> or a strange town name like <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2283\">Yeehaw Junction<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t matter. If it meets my warped sense of &#8220;unusual&#8221; it draws my attention and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine how I felt as I examined geographic features in southeastern Wyoming and came across a flyspeck of a town call CHUGWATER. What an odd name, I thought. All sorts of scenarios rolled through my mind. I simply had to find out more about this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jeepdawg\/209522225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/46\/209522225_9586fbe7d4_o.jpg\" alt=\"Chugwater Wyoming Exit. Photo by Sean Leahey; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>&lt;&#8212; Chugwater<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chugwater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chugwater<\/a> is a small town by just about any definition (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/yNbTLuEaXVFK6c3s5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The population hits maybe 250 residents on a good day. However, it&#8217;s also situated right along Interstate Highway 25 only half an hour north of Cheyenne and a couple hours north of Denver, so I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d call it &#8220;remote.&#8221; Sure, it\u2019s rural. Any settlement that places cattle guards on the ramps leading to the Interstate has to be considered rural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1588456634660!6m8!1m7!1sXZtgP-3TuSH9rrPJDg18yw!2m2!1d41.75692372283274!2d-104.8302392813!3f4.36!4f-4.439999999999998!5f0.5970117501821992\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, anyone with a car can get here pretty easily from some fairly populous cities without too much time or effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Etymology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I do love the sound of the name &#8212; Chugwater &#8212; and it certainly invokes a specific image. I was a bit disappointed with its derivation though, or rather <i>theories<\/i> of its derivation because it can&#8217;t be proven. It\u2019s definitely named after Chugwater Creek. Some believe it traces back to the local Native Americans, supposedly the sound of bison smacking (&#8220;chug&#8221;) a creek (&#8220;water&#8221;) after hunters stampeded them off the nearby siltstone cliffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody really knows if there\u2019s a grain of truth behind the legend or if some early settler maybe misinterpreted it or simply made it up. These stories are a dime-a-dozen out West. Either way Chugwater Creek has been carrying its name for a long time. It was marked as such on some of the earliest American maps from this territory in the 1840\u2019s. A lot more information can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wyomingtalesandtrails.com\/swan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wyoming Tales and Trails<\/a> for those who may be interested in all the details of Chugwater&#8217;s history along with numerous vintage photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern Times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s bring this back into the 21st century. There are plenty of interesting things about Chugwater today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(1) The Chugwater Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cronncc\/48383936876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48383936876_66825a385a_b.jpg\" alt=\"Chugwater, Wyoming. Photo by Curtis Cronn; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Pick up key here<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s free but only open by special request. You need to stop by the soda fountain to pick up the key. I&#8217;m not sure why I found that so funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(2) Modern Day Homesteading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chugwater <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=4647293?storyId=4647293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made the national news<\/a> a few years ago when it offered building lots for $100 to prospective residents as long as the homesteaders built houses within a year and remained for two years. I have no idea if that succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(3) Chili<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thomashawk\/47495783262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7873\/47495783262_0a3fea73dd_b.jpg\" alt=\"Watch Me Fall Apart. Photo by Thomas Hawk; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The town is home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chugwaterchili.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chugwater Chili Corp<\/a>. As I think about it, wouldn&#8217;t that have been a much better explanation for the town name? <em>The Chili is so hot you have to Chugwater.<\/em> Oh, never mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not too surprisingly, there is also an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/chugwaterchilicookoff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chugwater Chili Cookoff<\/a>. What you may not know, and here&#8217;s the basis for a great trivia question: this event also serves as the official Wyoming state chili cook-off championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(4) Music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m convinced that a town doesn&#8217;t truly have an odd name until a country\/western and\/or bluegrass band is named in its honor. Chugwater is no exception, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/category\/Musician-Band\/The-Chugwater-Band-318493194261\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chugwater Band<\/a> has played extensively throughout the United States and even in Europe, with songs such as Tic Tac Two Step and The Cowboy Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chugwater has a lot going on in one small package. Who knew that other than the couple hundred residents of Chugwater?
