One time when I was a kid, maybe ten years old, we went to Toronto for a couple of days. It was so long ago that I can&#8217;t even remember most of the details anymore. However, every trip I&#8217;ve done afterwards lasted no more than a few hours and barely crossed the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went to lunch in Montreal once during a camping trip in Vermont. Then we detoured briefly to Vancouver on the way back from visiting the geo-oddity known as <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1367\">Point Roberts<\/a>. We&#8217;ve gone to <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=27517\">Niagara Falls<\/a> a couple of times. And most recently we visited a truly fascinating <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=30625\">airplane museum \/ insectarium<\/a> in Sault Ste. Marie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I&#8217;ve been to Canada plenty of times, but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever truly experienced Canada. That needed to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/54584533538\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54584533538_88aef775aa_b.jpg\" alt=\"Proudly Canadian Owned. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic we started taking vacations at secluded lakeside homes to minimize COVID exposure. We needed to unwind but we also didn&#8217;t want to get sick. We&#8217;d load the car with everything we&#8217;d need for the week and then drive far away from everyone. So we ended up in interesting spots like <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23570\">Treasure Lake<\/a> in Pennsylvania and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=24123\">Lake Lancer<\/a> in Michigan. We discovered that we actually liked lakefront vacations in out-of-the-way places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d5827773.940174912!2d-84.71234687200038!3d44.50301099084232!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x882a7bdbea583ae5%3A0xd9be61e8338ba720!2sCollingwood%2C%20ON%2C%20Canada!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1750535395134!5m2!1sen!2sus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I combined all those preferences together, and added one more&#8230; decent craft beer options. A small Canadian town by a lake with good beer. Got it. Collingwood, Ontario rose to the top of the list after some Internet searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collingwood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/54584500804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54584500804_448c60f5ff_b.jpg\" alt=\"Greetings from Collingwood, Ontario. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d never heard of Collingwood but it ticked all the right boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canada? Unquestionably<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small town? About 25,000 residents away from the orbit of any major metropolitan area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lake? Yes, and some might even say a great one: Georgian Bay, an offshoot of Lake Huron<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Craft beer? It showed up regularly on lists of exceptional Canadian brewery towns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We would live in Collingwood for a week and explore the area from there. The only improvement would have been if it was located a few kilometres further north, and thus outside of the narrow 150 km (93 mile) belt <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=49\">where 75% of Canadians live<\/a>. I measured it at 140 km (87 miles) from the United States border running through Lake Ontario so we came oh-so-close. But we can&#8217;t have it all, and actually this was fine because we could drive from Toronto Pearson Airport pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/collingwood-route.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"754\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/collingwood-route.png\" alt=\"Route taking during the Ontario road trip. Map created using mob-rule.com\" class=\"wp-image-32240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/collingwood-route.png 754w, https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/collingwood-route-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My wife hoped that I wouldn&#8217;t expand my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/counties\/united-states-county-map.html\">County Counting hobby<\/a> into Canada, but the Mob Rule website does have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mob-rule.com\/scoreboard\/CAN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian option<\/a> so I counted them. However, to keep peace in the family, I won&#8217;t become as dogmatic here as with its U.S. counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two colors on the map. The ones newly visited appear in a darker blue shade: York Regional Municipality, Dufferin County, Simcoe County, and Grey County (that&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=15149\">Grey with an &#8220;e&#8221;<\/a>). Those marked in lighter blue represent places I visited previously: the City of Toronto and Peel Regional Municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the plan was pretty basic. We&#8217;d drive straight up to Collingwood and explore the southern edge of Georgian Bay. Then we&#8217;d return to the airport, turn in our rental car, and head into Toronto for the final two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brewery #1: Collingwood Brewery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/54574761756\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54574761756_f7157de0a5_b.jpg\" alt=\"Collingwood Brewery; Collingwood, Ontario. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first phase passed flawlessly. We took a direct nonstop flight to Toronto that landed exactly on time. We passed through border controls effortlessly and secured a rental car without any delay. The hour and a half drive to Collingwood went fine, with minimal weekend traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this created one minor hiccup. We&#8217;d traveled so perfectly that we couldn&#8217;t check into our rental house for another hour. That was completely unexpected. Travel never happens like this. We were approaching the outskirts of Collingwood at a rapid clip with an entire hour to kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That seemed like a perfect opportunity to stop at the first microbrewery of the trip. We checked our map and saw <a href=\"https:\/\/thecollingwoodbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Collingwood Brewery<\/a> on our direct path. Problem solved. We got a table at an outdoor patio and enjoyed a flight of beverages while appreciating the sunshine and a cool Canadian breeze. Our (now adult) kids enjoyed the first of many servings of poutine they would order during the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to repeat my caveat about quality over quantity at these brewery visits because we went to a bunch of them during the week. Instead I think I&#8217;ll just create a generic <a href=\"\/blog\/brewery-map\/\">disclaimer<\/a> for this and subsequent pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunset Point Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/54573895532\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54573895532_41ea710b0c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset Point Park; Collingwood, Ontario. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally we arrived at our home-away-from-home, went to the grocery store, fixed dinner, and settled in. That evening we walked  over to Sunset Point Park on Collingwood&#8217;s lakefront (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/AD1qkVMqF9u3oFwC6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) and witnessed the suggested activity.
