However, it was only the second time I&#8217;d ever posted on Twelve Mile Circle in its earliest days. Of course, anyone following this site for awhile knows it&#8217;s evolved greatly over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do-Over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, thanks to loyal reader Jim C., I get a rare opportunity for a bit of a do-over. Jim actually visited the Lost Peninsula in person recently. Then he was kind enough to allow me to share some of the photographs he collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who are unfamiliar with the geo-oddity found on the Lost Peninsula can <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3\">learn the basic facts at the original article<\/a>. Briefly, it&#8217;s a tiny corner of Michigan jutting into Lake Erie that was clipped from the rest of the state in 1836. It&#8217;s an artifact from when Michigan and Ohio resolved their dispute over the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toledo_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toledo Strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like the autobiography of a particularly shallow celebrity, I&#8217;m not really the &#8220;author&#8221; of this entry today. Sure, I&#8217;m wrapping a few words around it. Maybe I&#8217;ll make it look pretty. But Jim C. provided the meat. He&#8217;s the guiding hand behind the scenes who deserves the lion&#8217;s share of the credit. Thanks Jim!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jim&#8217;s Photos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/lost_peninsula_marina.jpg\" alt=\"Lost Peninsula Marina. Copyright photo by Jim C., used with permission.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s not much on the Lost Peninsula except a marina and a few houses (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/YdjyR6qzgoF8UpPC6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). Also I noticed that there&#8217;s also at least one restaurant. I&#8217;d love to eat there. It wouldn&#8217;t even matter if they had great food or not. I&#8217;ve been fixated on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=2644\">restaurants coinciding with strange geography<\/a> lately for no particular reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim was thoughtful enough to even find the boundary marker in Google Street View.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1623323968279!6m8!1m7!1st__gHP2Zu7n_WE7Vz71AVg!2m2!1d41.73277548558088!2d-83.46372382474678!3f149.81752180732425!4f-30.707000890009276!5f1.9587109090973311\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s look at a few of his photographs for a better view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/lost_peninsula_border.jpg\" alt=\"Michigan-Ohio Border at the Lost Peninsula. They attached a plaque to its base inscribed with a quote from Robert Frost&#8217;s famous poem, <em>Mending Wall<\/em>: &#8220;Good fences make good neighbors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/lost_peninsula_ohio.jpg\" alt=\"Ohio Side of the Border at the Lost Peninsula. Copyright photo by Jim C., used with permission.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So if a traveler from some other area of Michigan visited the Lost Peninsula, this is the side of the stone he would see first unless he came by boat. Here, Ohio ends and the Lost Peninsula begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/lost_peninsula_michigan.jpg\" alt=\"Michigan Side of the Border at the Lost Peninsula. Copyright photo by Jim C., used with permission.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he would see this side of the marker once he safely arrived upon Michigan soil on the Lost Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17018\">I visited the Lost Peninsula<\/a> in 2016.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcome Frommer&#8217;s Visitors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also a shout out to visitors arriving from Arthur Frommer&#8217;s blog. He featured my ferry page on December 4, 2009 (yesterday as I type this). Mr. Frommer says &#8220;you&#8217;ll agree that the site is well worth recording in your list of travel aids.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow! &#8212; nice words indeed for something I designed primarily as an outlet for my rampant perfectionism.
