So it was with great joy that I opened my Google Analytics account this morning and found that I&#8217;d recorded a visitor from Mali, my first from that west African nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/mali_visitor.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot from Google Analytics for howderfamily.com focusing on the country of Mali.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The red dot on the graphic corresponds to the city of Bamako, the capital of Mali. It has a population of about 1.7 million and is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not too surprising that it&#8217;s taken nearly two years for the first Mali visitor to register on my website. Although Mali has a lot of land it doesn&#8217;t have lots of inhabitants; only about 13 million. The official language is French but many people speak Bambara and other vernacular languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there aren&#8217;t many internet users in Mali either &#8212; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/the-world-factbook\/countries\/mali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CIA World Factbook<\/a> estimates a scant 200,000 users. How many of those could be English speaking fans of geo-oddities?
