My own photo.\"\/><figcaption>Ilh\u00e9us das Cabras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two dramatic rocks rise above the ocean off of the eastern end of Terceira&#8217;s southern coast (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/4GH4o2F86CjwScCB9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). These are the Ilh\u00e9us das Cabras, the &#8220;Goat Islands,&#8221; and they serve as silent witnesses to the power of the Earth. Not too long ago these jagged fragments joined to form a single nub. Then a volcano obliterated them. Now concave and completely cleaved in two like a bowl dropped in the sink, they contribute to the unexpected scenery along Terceira&#8217;s southern coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located west of Porto Judeu along the coastal road, the islets show obvious signs of destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a Distance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/terceira_ilheus_das_cabras_1.jpg\" alt=\"Ilh\u00e9us das Cabras Panorama.
