We took lots of photographs as we drove throughout the central and eastern portions of the island. However there weren&#8217;t enough photos to justify an individual page for each of the locations shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caloura<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/sao_miguel_caloura.jpg\" alt=\"Caloura. My own photo.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The picturesque town of Caloura (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/pncoHM79dhi5nhmi8\">map<\/a>) sits on the south central shoreline about halfway between Lagoa and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=24554\">Vila Franco do Campo<\/a>. Sturdy stone walls protect vineyards in this coastal village. Also, there&#8217;s also a great swimming beach at the base of town formed from a natural lagoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biai de Santa Iria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/sao_miguel_baia_de_santa_iria.jpg\" alt=\"Biai de Santa Iria. My own photo.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Biai de Santa Iria (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uV5NTuzdPU7G2ASZ6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) sits on the other side of the island on the north central shoreline. It is east of the town of <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22295\">Ribeira Grande<\/a> along the coastal road. This agricultural flat coastal plain drops dramatically into the ocean. Then waves crash violently against the exposed rock wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Porto Formoso<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/sao_miguel_porto_formoso.jpg\" alt=\"Porto Formoso. My own photo.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then comes Porto Formoso (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/hASzG73dFWG9TLCo8\">map<\/a>), continuing east on the northern shoreline. This is a continuation of the flat coastal plain atop cliffs that drop down into the ocean. This town serves as a fishing port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gorreana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/sao_miguel_gorreana_tea.jpg\" alt=\"Gorreana. My own photo.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Heading east on the same road a little farther leads to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/gorreana.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">F\u00e1brica de Ch\u00e1 Gorreana<\/a>,&#8221; the Gorreana Tea Factory (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/DEWHa6Pvd4JsK4JW8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). This may be the only tea factory in Europe. So they claim. Numerous hedgerows fill terraces on the sloping hillside.
