{"id":23760,"date":"2020-07-07T17:03:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T22:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=23760"},"modified":"2022-07-07T06:34:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-07T11:34:30","slug":"la-conner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/la-conner\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving Up Puget Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tacoma to Snoqualmie Falls to La Conner to Bellingham, Washington (May 14, 1998)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We stayed off I-5 to avoid spray coming off the trucks and followed a path through the town of Snoqualmie and its eponymous falls (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dBoNpT9rCErFwcjE6\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). A large inn sat aside wide cliffs of water. The cold, wind, and rain made us miss our car&#8217;s heater and we didn&#8217;t loiter long. [<em>UPDATE: We <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11194\">returned to the falls in 2012<\/a> and had a much better experience<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we headed north and eventually re-joined with I-5, the storm finally began to break. It rained intermittently awhile longer, but it never reached its previous strength and eventually stopped completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Conner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/wa-3.jpg\" alt=\"La Conner, Washington\"\/><figcaption>La Conner, Washington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier that morning someone suggested that since we were traveling north, we should go through the town of La Conner (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/198qiF1MBgwCAcMM8\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). This turned out to be an excellent idea. The charming little town offered several blocks that obviously catered to day travelers from Seattle, with numerous shops for antiques, crafts, curios, dining, etc. The town must be fairly well known in the area because street parking was tight even mid-week with questionable weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/zymurgy\/la-conner.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/washington_la_conner_brewing_exterior.jpg\" alt=\"La Conner Brewing Co.\"\/><\/a><figcaption>La Conner Brewing Co.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bellingham<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Later we took the scenic drive along the coast through <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/parks.state.wa.us\/536\/Larrabee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Larrabee State Park<\/a> to arrive in Bellingham (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/npiNhsdM9SXhtsnk8\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). We toured the old Bellingham town hall, now a museum (during our trip it had an excellent exhibit on a series of early 20th Century races to Mt.
