Well, as it turned out, a lot of history happened there. Plus the tourists needed something to do. Maybe they couldn&#8217;t golf or lounge at the beach the whole time. Sometimes it rained. People needed indoor diversions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went to several museums and even left a few for the next trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Museum of Bermuda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49549823338\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49549823338_84c8218498_o.jpg\" alt=\"The National Museum of Bermuda at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The Commissioner&#8217;s House within the Keep of the former Royal Naval Dockyard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I might as well start with the biggest and most important site of them all, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nmb.bm\/\">National Museum of Bermuda<\/a> at the former Royal Naval Dockyard (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/L6L8VSfazD6tSfGs7\">map<\/a>). It occupied the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23031\">Dockyard&#8217;s Keep<\/a>, the main fortification. The old Commissioner&#8217;s House held the most prestigious Bermudian artifacts. However, the museum spread across an entire complex of fortifications, ramparts, magazines and out-buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exhibits covered pretty much the entire history of Bermuda, from initial discovery through modern tourism and banking days. I enjoyed walking through the old buildings and savoring the spectacular ocean views just as much as the exhibits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolphin Quest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49550554242\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49550554242_f1622a9478_o.jpg\" alt=\"Dolphin quest located within the National Museum of Bermuda, at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The Dolphin Show<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>No, <a href=\"https:\/\/dolphinquest.com\/bermuda\/\">Dolphin Quest<\/a> wasn&#8217;t a museum. Nonetheless, it existed within the walls of the same Keep as the National Museum (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/8xXqPKXuM78owNLq7\">map<\/a>). That made it &#8220;close enough&#8221; for me to include on this page. The military used to unload munitions from ships there. They floated their cargo over to the docks on a small pond within the protected Keep.  Now dolphins use the pond for swimming and putting on shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole &#8220;swim with the dolphins&#8221; thing doesn&#8217;t really appeal to me on a number of levels. We did happen to walk by just as a show began and I don&#8217;t mind watching dolphins flip through the air. So there was that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few people seemed to be visiting in mid-February except for us and a busload of Bermudian school kids on a field trip. The kids really got into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49554023093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49554023093_4f832cac2a_o.jpg\" alt=\"The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute in Pembroke Parish\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Exploring the Deep<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining Bermuda with Triangle always seems a popular option. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buei.bm\/\">Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute<\/a> hyped that too (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/W7yDbjDSgH81xr6N6\">map<\/a>).  Roughly, the triangle where ships and aircraft allegedly encountered unusual dangers connected Bermuda to Miami to San Juan. A display at the institute examined various theories within that wedge ranging from the mundane to the outlandish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I supposed the institute couldn&#8217;t leave the triangle unaddressed, it actually focused more of its attention on other topics. I particularly liked all of the shipwreck artifacts and treasure gathered from Bermudian waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49554514911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49554514911_974e4dc887_o.jpg\" alt=\"Three sights in one! The Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo in Hamilton Parish\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The Aquarium Part<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We got to see three attractions in one at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bamz.org\/\">Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo<\/a> in Hamilton Parish (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/fwKbCngqUmSM5NEA6\">map<\/a>).  However, Bermuda doesn&#8217;t have a lot of available land. Don&#8217;t go expect to see the equivalent of the U.S.&#8217;s National Aquarium, Smithsonian Institution and San Diego Zoo here. Visitors get a <em>small<\/em> aquarium, a <em>small<\/em> museum and a <em>small<\/em> zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought about getting my older son (who loves zoos) a T-shirt. Then I remembered he only likes shirts from zoos he&#8217;s actually experienced in person. I could sympathize with that. I&#8217;m the same way with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/zymurgy\/beer-map.html\">brewery shirts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They called the museum portion the Bermuda Natural History Museum. It had a bit of a different twist than all the others because of its specific focus on the natural world. To me, one of its more humble displays had the greatest impact, a preserved specimen of a Bermuda Cicada. Those likely went extinct after people <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22981\">introduced a non-native bird<\/a> called the Great Kiskadee in the late 1950&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bermuda National Trust Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49527784762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49527784762_9da9677803_o.jpg\" alt=\"Scene from St. George's, Bermuda\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Not the Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt really tired the first day because of the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22931\">long airline delay<\/a>. That must be the reason why I didn&#8217;t take any photos of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnt.bm\/the-bnt-museum-at-the-globe-hotel\">Bermuda National Trust Museum<\/a> in the Town of St. George. Maybe they didn&#8217;t allow photography. I don&#8217;t remember. Instead, enjoy these flags on a building around the corner. The museum occupied the old Globe Hotel, built circa 1700 (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/GLw6rpxT6dvz8K4o6\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary exhibit focused great attention on blockade runners. Many Bermudians based in St. George made a fortune during the U.S. Civil War. Bermuda sat at a perfect spot to trade with the Confederacy. All they had to do was outrun Union ships trying enforcing the blockade.
