Had history gone a little differently another flag would have joined the list. It represented the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Flag_of_the_Republic_of_the_Rio_Grande.svg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/c5\/Flag_of_the_Republic_of_the_Rio_Grande.svg\/1024px-Flag_of_the_Republic_of_the_Rio_Grande.svg.png\" alt=\"Flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande. Heraldry, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three sections of Mexico split away as a result of Santa Anna&#8217;s increasingly dictatorial rule. Specifically, those included the Republics of Texas, Rio Grand and Yucat\u00e1n. The Republic of the Rio Grande existed only briefly. It lasted for about ten months in 1840, sandwiched between Mexico and the Republic of Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas formed the Republic. Additionally, Coahuila claimed a northern border up to the upper Medina River, and Tamaulipas up to the Nueces River. Both claims extended far north of the Rio Grande where the Republic of Texas staked its southern border. For a time this patch of land was in serious dispute. Mexico, the Republic of the Rio Grande and the Republic of Texas all claimed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Texas_Mexico_Disputed_Border_1836_to_1848.PNG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/Texas_Mexico_Disputed_Border_1836_to_1848.png\" alt=\"Texas Mexico Disputed Border 1836 to 1848. But the Republic failed. Its commanding general of its army accepted a position as a brigadier general in the Mexican army.
