From there it flows southeast to the head of the Tarr Inlet along the Alaska &#8211; Canada border. The glacier completes its slow-motion journey in Alaska&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glba\/index.htm\">Glacier Bay National Park<\/a>.&nbsp; However, the bulk of it extends into British Columbia&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.env.gov.bc.ca\/bcparks\/explore\/parkpgs\/tatshens\/\">Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park<\/a>. It stretches about two miles wide where it enters the water (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kawVjb1cTt7eUhav9\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22386\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/alaska_glacier_grand_pacific_2.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Pacific Glacier\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Sailing up to Grand Pacific Glacier under the Alaskan Flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>John Muir named the glacier in 1879. When Harry Fielding Reid visited in 1892 he found that it had receded so far that it had become three distinct glaciers. The largest and most northerly retained the name Grand Pacific.&nbsp; The middle one he named Johns Hopkins Glacier. The Harrington Expedition of 1899 named the smallest and southernmost of the three Reid Glacier in honor of the earlier expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reid Glacier<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22386\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/alaska_glacier_reid_1.jpg\" alt=\"Reid Glacier\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Approaching Reid Glacier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Harry Fielding Reid served as a geology professor from Johns Hopkins University among other places.
