Eugene to The Dalles to Portland, Oregon (May 12, 1998)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We struggled from Eugene to Portland on I-5 through heavy rain and cut East on I-84, enjoying remarkable scenery along the Columbia River gorge. Clouds began to dissipate as we pushed through the mountains and descended into Hood River. Sunny skies broke through by the time we reached The Dalles. With the Cascade Range behind us, we’d crossed into a much drier climate. It reminded me more of grassy areas in California than the ever-present evergreens from previous days along the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marked our eastern terminus. We backtracked on smaller roads along the Washington side of the river, eventually crossing back to Oregon and into the rain at Cascade Locks to reach Multnomah Falls (map<\/a>). On a nice day we would have taken the trail to the top, but the wind, rain and cold halted our progress at the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening my wife and I had dinner with a coworker of mine from our Portland office (who shall remain otherwise nameless on the Internet) and his wife. We enjoyed spending the time with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
