{"id":21616,"date":"2019-08-04T10:23:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-04T15:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21616"},"modified":"2024-10-04T10:59:58","modified_gmt":"2024-10-04T15:59:58","slug":"gulf-coast-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/gulf-coast-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulf Coast Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21595\">college tours<\/a> continued again last weekend although I didn&#8217;t go.&nbsp; My wife and our older son headed towards sites in Ohio and Pennsylvania.&nbsp;The younger guy and I flew down to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi to visit with family instead.&nbsp;He didn&#8217;t get to go on the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21256\">great road trip<\/a> over the holidays last year so I wanted to spend some time with him.&nbsp;Actually, he didn&#8217;t want to go on the road trip because he doesn&#8217;t like long rides.&nbsp;That&#8217;s why we took a plane to New Orleans for this quick trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"st\">The National WWII Museum<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48383065691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48383065691_957956f547_b.jpg\" alt=\"The National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>World War II Combat Uniforms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My son had only one thing on his list.&nbsp;He wanted to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/\">National World War II Museum<\/a> in New Orleans (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/qNFVXGiumiAWugVGA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp;That seemed like a completely reasonable request so we drove about an hour from the family homestead during the first morning of our visit and checked it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re a bit spoiled because we get to go to the Smithsonian museums anytime we want to back in DC.&nbsp;Sometimes we&#8217;re a little underwhelmed when we visit museums elsewhere.&nbsp;That didn&#8217;t seem to be an issue here, however.&nbsp;The World War II museum kept the highest levels of quality.&nbsp;I&#8217;d never been there before and I left considerably impressed.&nbsp;I&#8217;ll have to go back again&nbsp; on the next trip and catch what I missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">INFINITY Science Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48396408931\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48396408931_3d5cdd4901_b.jpg\" alt=\"The INFINITY Science Center at NASA Stennis Space Center. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The First Stage of a Saturn V Rocket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, we&#8217;d been to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitinfinity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INFINITY Science Center<\/a> at NASA Stennis (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/CLGRUy29YY2UyRJg8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) several times over the years.&nbsp;It&#8217;s been an old favorite of ours along the Mississippi Gulf Coast ever since we started going down there.&nbsp;I even <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23174\">wrote a page about it<\/a> several years ago although it&#8217;s considerably out of date now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility continues to change and evolve.\u00a0It used to be located on the actual NASA base and visitors could drive right up to it.\u00a0They stopped that after 9-11.\u00a0NASA replaced it with a brand new center relocated directly outside of the base adjacent to Interstate 10.\u00a0People tour the science center and then get onto buses to ride onto the base and view various rocket testing platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately we learned that as of July 2019, NASA discontinued the bus tours due to budget cuts.&nbsp;Hopefully those will return someday because they were always a highlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capturing A New Parish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22903\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/counties\/louisiana.png\" alt=\"Louisiana parishes that I've visited. Map generated for howderfamily.com using mob-rule.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>I&#8217;ve Visited the Colored-In Parishes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many trips recently, I used my home base as an opportunity to add to my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/counties\/united-states-county-map.html\">county counting<\/a> map.&nbsp;Oftentimes I&#8217;ll get up before dawn, before anyone else even awakens, and drive an hour-our-so to see what I can reach.&nbsp;Usually I can get home before anyone even notices I&#8217;m gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could have taken a couple of different directions this time, and for whatever reason I decided to head somewhat northwest. That brought me to Washington Parish, Louisiana.&nbsp;It&#8217;s found at the northeast corner of Louisiana&#8217;s eastern protrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My entire time in Washington Parish lasted about five minutes, just long enough to cross the border on Rt. 26 and turn around at the town of Bogalusa (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2Dv8qbbLj9wqKBZ56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0I saw nothing particularly remarkable along the way other than a lot of rural countryside.\u00a0It grew strangely foggy that Sunday morning as I crossed the Pearl River into Louisiana, and I felt relieved to flip back into Mississippi and return to sunshine.\u00a0My total captures continue to creep ever closer towards a nice round 1,500 although very slowly, now standing at 1,498.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chandeleur Island Brewing Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48396393421\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48396393421_7561fba239_b.jpg\" alt=\"Chandeleur Island Brewing Company in Gulfport, Mississippi. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The Array of Choices<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, and as expected, I stopped at a local brewery.&nbsp;Some of my family joined me there too.&nbsp;We met at <a href=\"https:\/\/chandeleurbrew.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chandeleur Island Brewing Company<\/a> in Gulfport, Mississippi (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uAA2u6Mz4H4NacocA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;The name came from a barrier island chain at the easternmost extreme of Louisiana (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xxg4VxTPKr3Cx3Kt8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp;It seemed pretty typical of small breweries in general, although quite remarkable for this area of the country.&nbsp;Typically one doesn&#8217;t find a lot of beverage diversity around here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The one other memorable moment happened when my son managed to get bitten by a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lesser_siren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lesser siren<\/a> salamander.&nbsp;These creatures can grow to a couple of feet long, and the one that bit him looked to be about that size, and as thick as a garden hose.&nbsp;They don&#8217;t normally bite people, but then again, people don&#8217;t normally try to pick them up either.&nbsp;My frantic Internet search confirmed that they are not venomous and sometimes they&#8217;re kept as pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing that, I felt pretty safe letting him disinfected the bite without taking him to Urgent Care.&nbsp;He survived just fine and promised to not do it again.&nbsp;He said it was the most memorable part of the trip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The college tours continued again last weekend although I didn&#8217;t go.&nbsp; My wife and our older son headed towards sites in Ohio and Pennsylvania.&nbsp;The younger guy and I flew down to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi to visit with family instead.&nbsp;He didn&#8217;t get to go on the great road trip over the holidays [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,7973,96,88,22,21],"tags":[496,6718,1990,6719,2402,1505,481,3422,465,6720,1069,5080,6717,1068],"class_list":["post-21616","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-borders","category-brewery","category-history","category-island","category-counties","category-states","tag-brewery","tag-chandeleur-island","tag-county-counting","tag-lesser-siren","tag-louisiana","tag-mississippi","tag-mississippi-gulf-coast","tag-nasa","tag-new-orleans","tag-salamander","tag-second-world-war","tag-stennis-space-center","tag-washington-parish","tag-world-war-ii"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
