{"id":21603,"date":"2019-07-21T11:29:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T16:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21603"},"modified":"2022-03-29T15:03:36","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T20:03:36","slug":"ithaca-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/ithaca-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ithaca, Part 2 (Waterfalls)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some sources claimed the presence of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitithaca.com\/attractions\/waterfalls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 150 waterfalls within 10 miles<\/a>&#8221; of Ithaca, New York.&nbsp; I guess it depends on how they&#8217;re defined.&nbsp; Even so, waterfalls seemed to pop into view just about anywhere we looked.&nbsp; As numerous T-shirts and bumper stickers around town reminded us, &#8220;Ithaca is Gorges.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We squeezed <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21595\">a lot of interesting places<\/a> into our brief trip and naturally that included a lot of waterfalls too.&nbsp; They all led to Cayuga Lake, a part of the Great Lakes watershed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m presenting them here in the order that we visited them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watkins Glen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48192636807\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48192636807_9d21ec666e_b.jpg\" alt=\"Watkins Glen State Park waterfall. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Watkins Glen State Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically the waterfalls of <a href=\"https:\/\/parks.ny.gov\/parks\/142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watkins Glen State Park<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t be included on this list.&nbsp; Visiting them required about a half-hour to drive over to Watkins Glen at the southern tip of Seneca Lake.&nbsp; However, I went there in 2006 and loved them so much I had to return on this trip.&nbsp; I wondered if they could possibly meet oversized expectations from my fading memories.&nbsp; Happily, they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few walks anywhere could top the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kiTDxG7pvrn2jf7CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) for the sheer concentration of&nbsp; amazing features crammed into such a confined space.&nbsp; Nineteen spectacular drops and cascades lined a narrow slot of less than a mile and a half.&nbsp; Sure, we had to push through hordes of tourists.&nbsp; These falls attracted tourists for a reason.&nbsp; I&#8217;ll come back again during the off-season someday and appreciate them with a bit of solitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cascadilla Gorge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48196184552\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48196184552_26f033c72f_b.jpg\" alt=\"Cascadilla Gorge Waterfall. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Cascadilla Gorge at Cornell University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cascadilla Gorge (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/nyipCJTkJLVdiwMr8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) cut through the southern edge of Cornell University.&nbsp; It offered a scenic path between campus and downtown, a part of the Cornell Botanic Gardens.&nbsp; Water dropped about 400 feet (122 metres) along the length of the gorge in a series of steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered about the name, Cascadilla.&nbsp; One source claimed &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascadilla.com\/faq\/faq-general.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it most likely comes from Spanish, meaning &#8216;little waterfall<\/a>.'&#8221;&nbsp; That seemed reasonably plausible although I couldn&#8217;t prove it.&nbsp; The cascades seemed most impressive as a collection, several falling from respectable heights although none really overshadowing the rest.&nbsp; I could see how some would view them as a set of &#8220;little&#8221; falls (relatively speaking) all lined up sequentially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ithacabeer.com\/beers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cascazilla beer<\/a> (yes, with a Z) at Ithaca Brewing.&nbsp; They explained, &#8220;<em>The name CascaZilla (Cas-kuh-zil-uh) is a play on both the name of the gorge in Ithaca called Cascadilla and the monster amount of Cascade Hops we use while dry hopping during the brewing process<\/em>.&#8221;&nbsp; So, I figured like Godzilla?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wells Falls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48207268391\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48207268391_bb422c17fa_b.jpg\" alt=\"Wells Falls. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Wells Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Along Six Mile Creek, below the overpass on Giles Street, stood one of the more obscure cascades within Ithaca; a feature called Wells Falls (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/PPHKa1aiNroFjJwX8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp; It also went by an unusual alternate designation, Businessman&#8217;s Lunch Falls.&nbsp; Apparently, with its proximity to downtown, it became a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitithaca.com\/attractions\/businessmans-lunch-falls-six-mile-creek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">popular lunch spot for downtown office workers<\/a>.&#8221;&nbsp; That seemed a little far-fetched to me because it would take a mile-long walk in both directions plus a descent down a dusty path curling around a steep hill.&nbsp; Maybe people in Ithaca get longer lunch breaks than I do.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t know.&nbsp; I did enjoy the surprisingly secluded spot so close to the roadside, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old ruins lining one side of the falls hinted at an industrial past.&nbsp; A mill stood there in the 19th Century.&nbsp; A water pumping station later occupied the site as the 20th Century dawned.&nbsp; Only a collapsing multi-story brick building and its huge rusty pipes remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ithaca Falls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48207315407\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48207315407_484e740ed4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Ithaca Falls. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Ithaca Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An impressive waterfall crashed 150 ft (46 m) down the appropriately named Fall Creek (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/apzDVPnrhdYbbHB78\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp; We got to this one quite easily too, practically in the middle of Ithaca.&nbsp; A small parking lot led to a short trail.&nbsp; Only one waterfall in town could be named Ithaca Falls. This one&#8217;s convenient location probably led to it claiming it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industrial activity took place here too.&nbsp; Several mills and factories stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the spot around the turn of the last century, using these rushing waters as a power source.&nbsp; One of them, the Ithaca Gun Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/ithacagun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still in existence<\/a>), lasted here until 1987.&nbsp; Unfortunately it also left a lot of lead residue behind, contaminating the soil.&nbsp; Signs warned people to wash up after visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Triphammer Falls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48207259721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48207259721_963bda7d97_b.jpg\" alt=\"Triphammer Falls. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Triphammer Falls at Cornell University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on Fall Creek although a little farther upstream stood Triphammer Falls (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/DSc3zxTvxVGXNMDPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp; This one could be visited quite easily too, smack in the middle of the Cornell University campus.&nbsp; A pedestrian bridge offered a handy observation post.&nbsp; Some of the natural falls remained.&nbsp; The remainder was formed by a man-made dam fashioned to look like a waterfall that held scenic Beebe Lake behind it.&nbsp; The whole conglomeration descended about 55 ft (17 m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered about the name of this one too so I looked up the definition of a triphammer.&nbsp; Merriam-Webster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/trip-hammer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defined<\/a> it as, &#8220;<em><span class=\"sb-0\"><span class=\"dt \"><span class=\"dtText\">a massive power hammer having a head that is tripped and allowed to fall by cam or lever action<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>.&#8221;&nbsp; Wikipedia had a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trip_hammer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nice video<\/a> of one in action being used to forge metal.&nbsp; A triphammer forge once stood at the site, using water power to operate the hammer, so the falls earned its name honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lucifer Falls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48214236931\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48214236931_162fb94a45_b.jpg\" alt=\"Lucifer Falls. Treman State Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we headed a bit farther out from Ithaca to <a href=\"https:\/\/parks.ny.gov\/parks\/135\/details.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert H. Treman State Park<\/a> on Enfield Creek, in a town of the same name.&nbsp; We entered on the western side of the park and hiked along a gorge trail (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uxFyxcbUg2hfd8Lr5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.&nbsp; That brought us down to Lucifer Falls, with its impressive 115 ft (35 m) drop.&nbsp; The trail led all the way down to its base, then crossed Enfield Creek, and looped back up to the other rim of the gorge.&nbsp; It required a little more physical activity to appreciate than most of falls we visited that weekend. However, I certainly didn&#8217;t mind the hike even with the excessive humidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Old Mill Falls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/48214233366\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48214233366_3c7714370d_b.jpg\" alt=\"Old Mill Falls.
