{"id":21540,"date":"2019-05-12T10:33:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-12T15:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21540"},"modified":"2022-02-21T09:02:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T14:02:14","slug":"jersey-shore-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/jersey-shore-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Jersey Shore, Part 3 (Lighthouses)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I enjoy visiting lighthouses .\u00a0They&#8217;re also one of those things <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/lighthouse.html\">I like to count and track<\/a>.\u00a0Of course I researched the most promising locations long before I ever got to the New Jersey coastline.\u00a0This shore seemed particularly attractive so I sifted through a bunch of options and planned my strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found several possibilities although I also discovered that many of them wouldn&#8217;t be open during mid-April at least according to their websites. I thought I&#8217;d go there anyway and at least take some exterior shots.\u00a0Fortunately, the situation differed in a happy way for once.\u00a0Every single lighthouse was open that week.\u00a0 We were able to climb a bunch of spiral staircases and gaze upon the Atlantic Ocean like keepers of yore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"navesink-twin-lights\">Navesink Twin Lights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47557658532\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7814\/47557658532_1e40ae5216_b.jpg\" alt=\"Navesink Twin Lights. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>One of the Navesink Twin Lights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We knew the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Navesink_Twin_Lights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Navesink Twin Lights <\/a>in Highlands Borough would be open, one of the few accurately depicting its status ahead of time (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/zzg5B9QwCHScbnYP7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0I&#8217;d never seen a facility quite like this one though with <em>two<\/em> towers flanking a large keepers quarters.\u00a0The solid stone construction and imposing footprint made the exterior seem more like a prison with watchtowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They allowed visitors to climb the north tower to experience sweeping views across New York Harbor with Manhattan skyscrapers visible in the distance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47557658912\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>). Such a busy port required something as distinctive as these dual lights, guiding ships past hazards since its construction in 1862.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sandy-hook-lighthouse\">Sandy Hook Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47557658432\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7927\/47557658432_cb860cf23a_b.jpg\" alt=\"Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Sandy Hook Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We fully expected the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gate\/planyourvisit\/sandy-hook.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sandy Hook Lighthouse<\/a> to be closed that day (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/w9vHeciz3wxk264g7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0We showed up anyway, just as a park ranger walked from the keepers quarters and unlocked the door to the tower.\u00a0He&#8217;d been escorting a small tour group and he asked if we wanted to join them.\u00a0Of course we did!\u00a0So we got to climb the light while learning about the history of the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tower actually predated the United States.\u00a0It began shining in 1764 and held the record as the oldest working lighthouse on U.S. soil.\u00a0British troops occupied the light during much of the Revolutionary War.\u00a0The rebellious Continental Army tried and failed to destroy the tower, so it survived the conflict intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It occupied a spot practically at the tip of Sandy Point when first constructed.\u00a0However, sand continued to accumulate along the shoreline over the last couple of centuries and now the tower sits about a mile and a half from the current point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"barnegat-light\">Barnegat Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/40651469423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/40651469423_3c5908a204_b.jpg\" alt=\"Barnegat Light. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Barnegat Light<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/dep\/parksandforests\/parks\/barnlig.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barnegat Light<\/a> proved so iconic that the surrounding town adopted its name, having originally been called Brownsville.\u00a0It took some driving to get all the way out to the tip of Long Beach Island (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xFwP8htkNfUtqAyx7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) and that added to its appeal.\u00a0Historically, the lighthouse provided a particularly important aid to navigation.\u00a0It marked a dangerous shoal where ships had to change course on an otherwise straight-line track between New Jersey and New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one had an interesting background too. A U.S. Army engineer designed the light and construction wrapped-up in 1859.\u00a0The designer happened to be George G. Meade, who later became a Major General for the Union army during the Civil War.\u00a0He defeated Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12597\">Battle of Gettysburg<\/a>.\u00a0I&#8217;m not sure how a lighthouse designer became a commanding general in such a significant battle.\u00a0Clearly he had multiple talents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our visit took place on an extremely windy day.\u00a0The tower&#8217;s extra elevation only added to that effect.\u00a0We were perfectly safe although it felt like we might get blown out to sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"absecon-lighthouse\">Absecon Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46900827524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46900827524_91115ae97f_b.jpg\" alt=\"Absecon Lighthouse. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Absecon Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>George Meade designed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abseconlighthouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Absecon Lighthouse<\/a> in Atlantic City, too (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/V4WNdFVecA6xsgJ29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0In fact his success at Absecon led to the assignment for Barnegat.\u00a0He saw Absecon rise in 1857.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is now the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest in the United States (171 feet \/ 42 metres).\u00a0I can vouch that I definitely felt every foot of elevation gain as we climbed each successive step to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the tallest structure in Atlantic City, any number of casinos now dwarfed it.\u00a0Those were a little farther away from the tower so it still offered some nice views.\u00a0Well, parts of the view seemed nice, like the beaches and the ocean and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21532\">the boardwalk<\/a>.\u00a0That contrasted with the elevated gaze onto crumbling row houses, empty weed-strewn lots, and urban blight.\u00a0I did my best to ignore that part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cape-may-lighthouse\">Cape May Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47639905961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47639905961_ed9457d1a3_b.jpg\" alt=\"Cape May Lighthouse from the southernmost point in New Jersey. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Cape May Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another wonderful light appeared at the far southern tip of New Jersey.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/capemaymac.org\/experience\/cape-may-lighthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cape May Lighthouse<\/a> began operations in 1859 and continues to serve as an active navigational aid today (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/rRqKunR6kfy9DJzL7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0Two predecessor lighthouses sat at unfortunate locations nearby.\u00a0Actually, those sites no longer existed, having been swallowed by the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current structure fared much better though, placed a little farther back from the shoreline and constructed to withstand the strongest hurricanes.\u00a0We saw more tourists here than at any of the other lights.\u00a0It didn&#8217;t surprise me.\u00a0We stopped by on a warm afternoon with perfect weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bonus\">Bonus!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We even found a couple of unexpected lighthouses as we rode the ferry across the mouth of Delaware Bay.\u00a0We couldn&#8217;t stop at either one them of course, although we did get close enough for some pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46921720184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46921720184_4691eb2e0e_b.jpg\" alt=\"Harbor of Refuge Light from the Cape May - Lewes Ferry. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Harbor of Refuge Light<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>No natural harbors existed near the entrance to Delaware Bay so a series of breakwaters were constructed in the vicinity of Lewes, Delaware during the second half of the nineteenth century.\u00a0These collectively came to be known as the National Harbor of Refuge.\u00a0Ships heading up or down the Atlantic coast or over to the port of Philadelphia that encountered stormy conditions could stop at the refuge for safety.\u00a0Lighthouses were used as beacons to mark the breakwaters.\u00a0The Harbor of Refuge light became a primary focal point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32703277297\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/32703277297_7c331eeb27_b.jpg\" alt=\"Delaware Breakwater East End Light from the Cape May - Lewes Ferry.
