{"id":21532,"date":"2019-05-05T09:14:32","date_gmt":"2019-05-05T14:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21532"},"modified":"2021-05-14T06:29:32","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T11:29:32","slug":"jersey-shore-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/jersey-shore-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Jersey Shore, Part 2 (Boardwalks)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What should people do when they visit the Jersey Shore?&nbsp; Hit some of the many well-known boardwalks of course.&nbsp; I doubt any other stretch of Atlantic coastline in the United States has a greater density of boardwalks than New Jersey.&nbsp; We traveled the length of the state&#8217;s waterfront, heading north to south, from Sandy Hook to Cape May and strolled down several boardwalks along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t think anyone could walk every one of them in a single week although we gave it a good shot.\u00a0 Each one had its own unique characteristics that appealed to distinctly different audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asbury Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/33741069008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/33741069008_d6c09988e6_b.jpg\" alt=\"Asbury Park Boardwalk. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Asbury Park Boardwalk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We strolled the Asbury Park boardwalk (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/hCxWDieCFZEHtdYv7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) on an early weekday morning as a storm rolled out to sea, leaving the planks damp and deserted.\u00a0 The previous evening seemed a lot more lively although probably considerably quieter than what it must be like during the summer.\u00a0 Some places remained open all year round including the Silverball Museum (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32675713247\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>) where visitors could play vintage pinball machines by the hour or the day.\u00a0 The nearby Wonder Bar (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32675729967\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>) offered a nice spot to stop for a drink.\u00a0 A few of the restaurants also seemed open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It evoked images of Bruce Springsteen who got his start here, performing at the Stone Pony (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47618349681\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>) and other clubs in the vicinity.\u00a0 Madam Marie&#8217;s psychic booth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32675726907\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>), mentioned in his &#8220;<em>4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)<\/em>&#8221; continued to exist.\u00a0 The original Madam Marie passed away years ago although a descendant still tells fortunes at that spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barnegat Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46900829064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46900829064_c1dddbb352_b.jpg\" alt=\"Viking Village at Barnegat Light. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Viking Village at Barnegat Light<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnegat Light didn&#8217;t actually have a boardwalk.\u00a0 The town fell a little off the beaten path at the very northern tip of Long Beach Island and didn&#8217;t have enough visitors to support one.\u00a0 However, it did have Bayview Avenue, a nice road that hugged the island&#8217;s western coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infrequent traffic moved at a leisurely pace and wide shoulders offered plenty of room for walkers or bikers.\u00a0 Local marinas included actual working fishing boats in addition to pleasure craft, a more blue collar atmosphere than many of the other shore towns.\u00a0 A small area of former fishing shacks called Viking Village (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/mGMFSKxCJtXBLw7z9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) provided the closest thing to a shopping district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Atlantic City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46709583845\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46709583845_481ab189e4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Atlantic City boardwalk. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Boardwalk Hall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the exact opposite of Barnegat Light&#8217;s solitude and that would describe the boardwalk at Atlantic City.\u00a0 Casinos lined the shore along a wide wooden trail.\u00a0 Crowds enjoyed springtime warmth as they roved from one gambling establishment to another.\u00a0 Boardwalk Hall (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/h2GmkjpquKKeu6pw7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) in its Art Deco magnificence rose above the esplanade, the famous home of the Miss America pageant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, almost every part of town just a block to the west confirmed preconceived notions of the financial decline of the city.\u00a0 Those blemishes weren&#8217;t visible from the boardwalk though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ocean City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47632920051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47632920051_20c15640b3_b.jpg\" alt=\"New Jersey's Ocean City boardwalk. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Mini-Golf at Ocean City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocean City&#8217;s boardwalk (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/etapRBiXkAw1j41P8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) gave a much more wholesome experience.\u00a0 Gaudy and cheezy came to mind almost immediately, although in a pleasantly nostalgic way.\u00a0 Three distinct buying experiences dominated the local scene:\u00a0 T-shirt shops; miniature golf courses and pizza parlors.\u00a0 I&#8217;d never seen such a concentration of any of these types of businesses in such a short distance.\u00a0 It seemed like dozens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t try to find a beer though.\u00a0 Ocean City has been &#8220;dry&#8221; since its founding in 1879.\u00a0 Alcohol can&#8217;t be sold there, a point the town uses to bolster its family-friendly reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wildwood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47587136162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47587136162_422335df85_b.jpg\" alt=\"Wildwood. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Wildwood<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wildwood featured amusement park after amusement park along its scenic oceanfront boardwalk (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/mUDM3FLw5UmL6f9S6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).\u00a0 Oddly, most of the shops on this stretch hadn&#8217;t yet opened for the season, more so than any of the other seashore towns we visited that week.\u00a0 All I could guess was that maybe they couldn&#8217;t attract enough visitors until the amusement parks opened, and the rides weren&#8217;t operating in mid April.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t matter to us though.\u00a0 We came to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cape May<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32703388107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/32703388107_5d99f2152c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Cape May promenade.
