{"id":21500,"date":"2019-03-03T10:46:08","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T15:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21500"},"modified":"2022-06-22T06:20:37","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T11:20:37","slug":"cross-country-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/cross-country-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross-Country, Part 8 (Bonus!)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Finally the end.&nbsp;Or was it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;d driven most of the way across the United States.\u00a0Then we spent a full week in Phoenix, Arizona.\u00a0However, we weren&#8217;t completely done.\u00a0Our rental home agreement ended two days before our return flight so we needed to spend a little time somewhere else.\u00a0Originally my wife figured we could go down to Tucson.\u00a0\u00a0Instead we completed the cross-country journey by heading towards San Diego on Interstate 8.\u00a0I <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21284\">explained some of that<\/a> in an earlier episode so I won&#8217;t repeat how we came to that decision.\u00a0Nonetheless it appended a bonus segment onto the trip and a few more things to talk about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yuma Territorial Prison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/45664591975\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7820\/45664591975_3528bd9ac3_b.jpg\" alt=\"Yuma Territorial Prison. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Prison Cells<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Very few communities of any size existed anywhere between Phoenix and San Diego (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/GnQm3BAN26hXz5dS8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp;In fact, pretty much only Yuma stood out.&nbsp; It rose from the desert just on the Arizona side of the line, about half-way along our six hour drive.&nbsp;That made it a perfect place to stop and stretch our legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally I wanted to cross into Mexico at the Andrade &#8211; Los Algodones border station a few miles west of Yuma.&nbsp;Looking at Los Algodones on Google Street View (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xBJnyMHLx4KqAY6X9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">image<\/a>), it seemed the town existed primarily to provide cheap medical services and pharmaceuticals to retirees from the United States.&nbsp;I figured we&#8217;d walk around, maybe grab some lunch and perhaps some souvenirs.&nbsp; I even brought our passports.&nbsp;My wife never felt comfortable with the idea and she vetoed it at the last moment, probably for good reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we made do with what we could find in Yuma.&nbsp;A quick search of the Intertubes turned up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yumaprison.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yuma Territorial Prison<\/a>.&nbsp;I&#8217;ve <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17215\">visited old prisons<\/a> before so it seemed like a worthy place to spend an hour or two.&nbsp;The prison opened in 1876 &#8212; long before Arizona statehood &#8212; and housed prisoners until 1909.&nbsp;The strangest bit of trivia I discovered there was that the local high school sports team calls itself the Criminals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32705112178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dunes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46513344612\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4849\/46513344612_29b20dd5b5_b.jpg\" alt=\"Interstate 8 rest stop with sand dunes. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Dunes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d never driven this particular stretch of interstate before so it came as quite a surprise when we crossed into California and the terrain transformed into a sea of sand.&nbsp;We&#8217;d entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/visit\/imperial-sand-dunes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody can say definitively how this feature formed.&nbsp;However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algodones_Dunes#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevailing theory<\/a> focused on sands that blew from the beach of an inland lake that existed when the Colorado River took a different course than it does today.&nbsp;Regardless, it seemed out of place and somewhat otherworldly.&nbsp;Lots of people seemed to be having a good time running their dune buggies up and over the hillsides though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plenty of Rest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46526703452\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7830\/46526703452_e1583a05d8_b.jpg\" alt=\"Interstate 8 rest stop below sea level. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Rest Below Sea Level<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve Mile Circle once bemoaned the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2682\">decline of public restrooms<\/a> along interstate highways.&nbsp;That didn&#8217;t seem to be a problem along I-8.&nbsp;Few services and fewer towns within this desolate stretch pretty much necessitated them.&nbsp;Oddly, by some strange set of circumstances, we ended up stopping at <em>all four of them<\/em> on Interstate 8; two heading west and two returning east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite rest stop had to have been the one in California&#8217;s Imperial Valley (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ZCLK6updDMs1q48b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;This spot happened to be located remarkably close &#8212; barely more than a mile &#8212; from the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12542\">lowest overland elevation<\/a> in the entire interstate highway system.&nbsp;This would put it at about 50 feet (16 metres) below sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We crossed the valley and then headed up into the Laguna Mountains. There we encountered another anomaly, one of the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12364\">widest splits between opposing lanes<\/a> on a U.S. interstate highway.&nbsp;I-8 sure packed a lot of entertainment into such an &#8220;empty&#8221; stretch, at least for those of us fascinated by weird geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">San Diego<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/44747642740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7830\/44747642740_f72b93b53c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Bee-eater birds at the San Diego Zoo.
