{"id":21297,"date":"2019-02-02T17:20:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-02T22:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=21297"},"modified":"2024-10-04T13:12:20","modified_gmt":"2024-10-04T18:12:20","slug":"cross-country-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/cross-country-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross-Country, Part 4 (Zoos &#038; Brews)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I came for the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21284\">county counting<\/a>.\u00a0 Although, let&#8217;s recall I had to <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21256\">bribe my older son<\/a> before this road trip could even begin.\u00a0 How many zoos could we see during six days of driving from coast to coast, plus a week in Phoenix?\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 We visited six, well seven actually, although we only got to see six.\u00a0 I had to balance it out with breweries and brewpubs.\u00a0 We stopped at six of those as well.\u00a0 He got something from the deal and I got something too.\u00a0 I think we both felt like we got the better end of the bargain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zoos\">Zoos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32691887198\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7841\/32691887198_20d3c115b7_b.jpg\" alt=\"San Diego Zoo. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Entrance to the San Diego Zoo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We stopped at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Zoo Knoxville<\/li><li>Nashville Zoo at Grassmere<\/li><li>El Paso Zoo<\/li><li>Phoenix Zoo<\/li><li>Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium &amp; Safari Park (Litchfield Park, AZ)<\/li><li>San Diego Zoo<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, I don&#8217;t have a zoo obsession.&nbsp; I can take them or leave them.&nbsp; However a deal was a deal so I remained a good sport and let my son spend as much time as he liked at each stop.&nbsp; He wanted to see every single animal and examine them all in excruciating detail.&nbsp; After awhile the zoos began to blend into each other and I couldn&#8217;t recall which animals we saw where.&nbsp; I knew that one of them (I think in Arizona) had an Eastern Gray Squirrel.&nbsp; That amused me.&nbsp; Although I guess it made sense because they don&#8217;t inhabit the Sonoran Desert and probably seemed &#8220;exotic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it seemed like every zoo had a carousel.&nbsp; It must be some kind of zoo rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/32579983768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4915\/32579983768_93cc823f4f_b.jpg\" alt=\"Nashville Zoo. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Carousel at the Nashville Zoo, where instead of having a monkey on your back, you can do that to the monkey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wintertime weather didn&#8217;t stop us either.\u00a0 In fact, I rather preferred it.\u00a0 A little chill didn&#8217;t bother the animals although it kept away the humans.\u00a0 We could tour the parks as casually as we liked, get close to the animals, and never feel crowded.\u00a0 The Phoenix and San Diego Zoos, by contrast, presented mild temperatures and way too many people.\u00a0 We had a tough time getting anywhere near the exhibits particularly in San Diego on New Years Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46476469982\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4841\/46476469982_f94480f16b_b.jpg\" alt=\"Phoenix Zoo. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>A mandrill at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One possibility escaped our grasp.&nbsp; We wanted to stop&nbsp; at the zoo in Abilene, Texas.&nbsp; However a storm rolled over the Southern Plains and the skies opened up as we arrived at the entrance.&nbsp; Then the lightning came.&nbsp; We saw ducks floating on the flooded road outside of the zoo.&nbsp; We figured that was our cue to get away from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brews\">Brews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/44621689650\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7921\/44621689650_0214a15ca2_b.jpg\" alt=\"Balter Beer Works. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We stopped at some interesting breweries too:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Balter Beerworks (Knoxville, TN)<\/li><li>Frisky Brewing (Odessa, TX)<\/li><li>The Beer Research Institute (Mesa, AZ)<\/li><li>Saddle Mountain Brewing (Goodyear, AZ)<\/li><li>Hillcrest Brewing (San Diego, CA)<\/li><li>Prison Hill Brewing (Yuma, AZ)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Longtime readers might be wondering why I didn&#8217;t visit a lot more breweries.\u00a0 After all, I&#8217;ve focused entire vacations around brewery tourism in renowned beer towns such as <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11235\">Bend<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=16151\">Asheville<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17011\">Grand Rapids<\/a>.\u00a0 A number of things conspired against me this time.\u00a0 First, we wanted to cover as much ground as quickly as we could and that didn&#8217;t always align with brewery locations.\u00a0 Second, we drove through a prime location with multiple breweries (Dallas) on Christmas Day so nothing was open.\u00a0 Finally, we traveled through large swaths of the southern <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bible_Belt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bible Belt<\/a>\u00a0 that simply didn&#8217;t have any breweries.\u00a0 I did the best I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/46526704252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4893\/46526704252_25a3f323b8_b.jpg\" alt=\"Prison Hill Brewing Co.
