It exhibits an unexpected twist of Strange Geography. Actually, it sits on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, some 1,500 kilometers (950 miles) from the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon. The island of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/portugal\/pico_madalena.html\">Pico<\/a> (literally &#8220;peak&#8221;) with its dominant stratovolcano of the same name rises 2,351 meters (7,713 feet) above\u00a0the Atlantic plain in the <a href=\"\/blog\/azores-index\/\">Azores<\/a> archipelago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d1599396.7644623453!2d-28.399258!3d38.468675000000005!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0xb4790961caad005%3A0x990e3975cd85f6c9!2sMt%20Pico!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1624535065417!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portugal&#8217;s Azores Autonomous Region rides atop the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. There, two massive tectonic plates, the North American and Eurasian Plates, pull slowly apart. Magma then forced its way to the surface to form the island chain.\u00a0 The process continues and active volcanoes can still be found. Thus, Pico fits the stereotype of what a volcano &#8220;should look like,&#8221; erupting as recently as 1720.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/portugal\/pico_volcano_ocean_view-1a.jpg\" alt=\"Pico, Portugal.
