{"id":17961,"date":"2017-10-08T05:37:26","date_gmt":"2017-10-08T10:37:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=17961"},"modified":"2022-05-27T14:44:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T19:44:38","slug":"county-hunter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/county-hunter\/","title":{"rendered":"County Hunter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The itch to continuously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/counties\/united-states-county-map.html\">visit new counties<\/a> kept stalking me. I did really well this year with a long road trip <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17604\">back from Missouri<\/a> in April. Then I drove <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17699\">all over the Midwest<\/a> in June. Finally I took the whole family through the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17826\">Four Corners region<\/a> of New Mexico and Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My county counting tally stood at 1,425 by the end of the summer and yet I still wanted more. Unfortunately, I&#8217;d used up most of my vacation hours for the year so I was constrained. I needed to find the closest unvisited county and hit it on a weekend. Three options existed, all two-or-more hours away. Nothing closer remained anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pocahontas County, West Virginia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stephen_little\/4949867207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4089\/4949867207_3f5c28ecf9_b.jpg\" alt=\"Forest Moon of Endor? Photo by Stephen Little; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I should be able to reach to nearest border of Pocahontas County in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Certainly this would be too far for a dash-and-grab, stepping my toe across the border and heading back home. That would make a round trip of nearly seven hours just to color a single county on my map. Even I thought that sounded ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, if I decided to select Pocahontas for my excursion, I could find a couple of interesting activities waiting for me there. The media features Pocahontas periodically because of the town of Green Bank, home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenbankobservatory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Radio Astronomy Observatory<\/a>. Scientists search for aliens with that telescope among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In support, the government created a large National Radio Quiet Zone around the observatory to prevent interference with its delicate instruments. Nobody can use a mobile phone, a WiFi router or even a microwave oven within twenty miles of Green Bank. The town also attracted some rather unusual residents in recent years as a result; those who believed that they suffered from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2016\/07\/08\/electromagnetic-hypersensitivity-wifi-allergies-474404.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electromagnetic hypersensitivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere in Pocahontas I could visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowshoemtn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Snowshoe Mountain<\/a> Ski Resort. It offered year-round activities like many ski resorts do now. I could probably get there just in time to see the leaves change colors if I left sometime in the next couple of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=18072\">Success<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Atlantic County, New Jersey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47625117861\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47625117861_2e1d59dd2e_b.jpg\" alt=\"The boardwalk at Atlantic City, New Jersey. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A little closer to home, 2 hours and 45 minutes away, I could be in Atlantic County, New Jersey. Theoretically. However, I&#8217;d need to thread the needle perfectly to avoid miserable traffic on dreaded Interstate 95. So it could also take <em>much<\/em> longer than expected. Then I&#8217;d need to add another half-hour to get to the only attraction worth seeing, Atlantic City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can anyone believe I&#8217;ve never been to Atlantic City? I don&#8217;t know how that happened. I&#8217;ve had a number of opportunities over the year and yet I&#8217;ve never made the trip. Gambling isn&#8217;t my thing so that explains much of it. There are plenty of closer beaches if I just want to get my feet wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, I wouldn&#8217;t mind strolling along the famous boardwalk, enjoying the flash of casino lights and hunting for every <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9372\">street from the Monopoly game<\/a>. Really, to be honest, I&#8217;d use this as a springboard for a longer drive to capture Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth Counties. This neatly aligned trio of counties remained the only ones in New Jersey I&#8217;ve yet to capture. Then I could mark New Jersey done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21523\">Mission Accomplished<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Huntingdon and Blair Counties, Pennsylvania<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mob-rule.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/closest-counties.gif\" alt=\"Route to Huntingdon and Blair. Map produced using mob-rule.com\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Route to Huntingdon and Blair (Dark Blue)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead I chose Huntingdon and Blair Counties in Pennsylvania. I could get to Huntingdon in as little as two hours, the absolutely closest county I&#8217;ve yet to visit. I could push deep into Blair all the way to Altoona, the region&#8217;s largest city, in about three. The Twelve Mile Circle audience won&#8217;t find out what I discovered just yet. I&#8217;ll keep readers in suspense. However, expect to see an article on Huntingdon and another on Blair in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Bank and Atlantic City will be visited someday too.
