Obviously it has its greatest impact where there are rapids changes in elevation such as mountain or canyons. I&#8217;ve had a lot of fun playing around with the feature as in some of the examples below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[<em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: Terrain no longer shows up in embedded Google Maps so you&#8217;ll need to select &#8220;view larger map&#8221; to open them in Google for the full effect<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d174631.35812544994!2d-121.759415!3d46.851268999999995!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1624621267283!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mount Rainier rises majestically in western Washington, not too far away from Seattle,&nbsp;towering high above its surrounding plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d412351.3516974656!2d-112.041321!3d36.15450900000001!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1624621359508!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Grand Canyon in Arizona is equally impressive, this time representing a large drop in elevation from the surrounding plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d70139.61348439513!2d-5.088387!3d56.67660200000002!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1624621431796!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feature appears in other parts of the world too. Here is <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=24958\">Glen &#8220;valley&#8221; Coe (includes photo)<\/a> in the Scottish Highlands. Notice how a road snakes through the valley between the two large ridges. Having driven down that road before I can attest to its natural beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d57693.39206415519!2d131.03651!3d-25.343250000000005!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1624621602762!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, I located Uluru (sometimes called Ayers Rock).
