{"id":1679,"date":"2009-07-06T17:53:09","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T22:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=1679"},"modified":"2022-01-18T14:53:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T19:53:51","slug":"a-capital-fourth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/a-capital-fourth\/","title":{"rendered":"A Capital Fourth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Rare Opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Something awesome dropped into my lap a few days before the July 4 Independence Day celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Washington DC - 4th of July 09\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oZIcJSaqhcU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My family and I received an invitation to view the fireworks on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The vantage was a rooftop balcony only two blocks away from the action. A lifetime can pass without an offer such as this so I snapped it up immediately. Imagine the symbolic significance of being in a capital city as its nation celebrates independence and freedom with a rousing spectacle of light and sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I&#8217;d Seen it From A Distance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, truth be told, I\u2019ve attended this event before. However I\u2019ve always watched from far away. For instance, we used the grounds of the Iwo Jima Memorial or the Netherlands Carillon along the Arlington Ridge in Virginia. This is a nice elevation but it\u2019s also about two miles away from the rockets&#8217; red glare and the bombs bursting in air. This distance reduces much of the visual impact. It\u2019s far enough away from the event that the the boom arrives noticeably after the flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/washington_rooftop_view.jpg\" alt=\"High Atop a Washington DC Rooftop. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I could never seem to rationalize going to the foot of the Washington Monument hours in advance to claim a prime spot, sitting out in the hot sun all day so I wouldn\u2019t lose it, and sharing my personal space with several hundred thousand of my closest friends. Maybe that\u2019s a sign of age. I dunno. I wasn\u2019t all that tempted even when I was younger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with just about everything else I\u2019ve discuss on Twelve Mile Circle, there is also an underlying geographical dimension. A physical barrier, the Potomac River, stands between the fine people of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the grand firework show in the District of Columbia. The problem isn\u2019t getting across the river so much as trying to return after the show. That&#8217;s when thousands of revelers hit the bridges and subway stations simultaneously. So for a variety of reasons I\u2019d always been content to be on the &#8220;right&#8221; side of the river to avoid the mayhem, on the increasingly rare occasions I even made an effort to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too Good to Refuse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now most of those excuses fell by the wayside. I could arrive whenever I pleased, evade the crowds, find ample space on a large balcony. Then I could get the best seats in the house directly in front of the firework staging area. Also, I could go inside the building if the weather turned nasty. Most importantly, I could even avoid those nasty porta-potties. Sure, I\u2019d still have to fight the crowds after the show. However, I could withstand any of that with every other inconvenience and lame excuse removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8842482174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2855\/8842482174_6897aba064_o.jpg\" alt=\"The Washington Monument as Nighttime Approaches. Flashing and twinkling sprinkled the amassed crowd far below, from cameras and mobile phones recording the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quite a Show!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8842481794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7434\/8842481794_f6c09b2b04_o.jpg\" alt=\"Fireworks on the National Mall. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Finally, Fireworks!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tiny colored bursts appeared along the far southwestern horizon as distant towns in Maryland began their local celebrations. Suddenly rockets thundered to the sky without warning. Their explosive force threw sparks in concentric directions, accompanied by concussions of sound and vibration for the next twenty minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an incredible show.
