It&#8217;s one of the most interesting Internet-based geography challenges ever undertaken, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confluence.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Degree Confluence Project<\/a>. Its mission statement provides the most succinct description:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8869439364\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3794\/8869439364_3b4446882d_b.jpg\" alt=\"45X90 Spot. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been to one integer confluence. Last summer I <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1446\">dragged the family to the 45X90 spot<\/a>. It sits at exactly 45.00 degrees north and 90.00 degrees west. Significantly, that&#8217;s halfway between the equator and the north pole and halfway across the western hemisphere. Granted, it\u2019s a very special confluence, but you get the idea. The Project considers any point upon the earth where both the longitude and latitude equal an integer as worthy of recording for posterity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/confluence.org\/infoconf.php#location\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website notes<\/a> that there are 64,442 confluences of which 21,543 fall on land. Some of the visits are amazing. Imagine the site in Switzerland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confluence.org\/confluence.php?visitid=15088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">where the first underwater visit took place<\/a>. Or the incredible journey one trekker took to find the &#8220;other&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confluence.org\/confluence.php?lat=45&amp;lon=90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">45X90 spot in Xinjiang, China<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many other spots are readily accessible and anyone can participate. For example, an easily-approachable spot outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/confluence.org\/confluence.php?lat=39&amp;lon=-77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a suburban apartment building<\/a> in Silver Spring, Maryland, waits for me to visit someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part geography lesson, part travelogue, part adventure tale, each vignette tells its own imaginative story. You can get lost inside this website for hours. There\u2019s no guessing what might sit at a confluence until someone goes and finds out.
