There are several U.S. states, led by Florida, that are indeed even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/03\/science-several-us-states-led-by-florida-are-flatter-than-a-pancake\/284348\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>flatter<\/em> than a pancake<\/a>. That&#8217;s not what this article is about. Rather I found a location that may or may not have been flatter than a pancake. Nonetheless it should be flatter if its name did it justice. The <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geographic Names Information System<\/a> identified it as Pancake Flats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Green Springs Run Wopsy Mountain\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HuYuPOjzFdA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I expected to find virtually nothing about this highly obscure spot northwest of Altoona, Pennsylvania that wasn&#8217;t even significant enough to be identified on online maps (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/rHFgSRHJWsdp37JM7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for example<\/a>). Yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/marciabonta.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/09\/pancake-flats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people have been there<\/a>. Lots of them. It was one of the signature features, albeit a relatively flat feature set amongst much rougher terrain. It sits along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/or\/resources\/recreation\/csnm\/files\/green-springs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greensprings Trail<\/a> at Wopsononock (Wopsy) Mountain. The Bureau of Land Management described the trail as a &#8220;2.2 mile loop. Mainly level, low difficulty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GNIS listed only a single Pancake Flats. However, there were 48 other entries for various other Pancakes in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I found very little information about populated places named Pancake. Locations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Texas did manage to stand out from the crowd a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">West Virginia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mdmarkus66\/5527528677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5052\/5527528677_5f3d6940a5_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_9277. Photo by Mark Plummer; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pancake, West Virginia (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/1QbBp9N6uPT4JL286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) consisted of little more than an abandoned whistle stop along the South Branch Valley Railroad <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pancake,_West_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">named<\/a> for the Pancake family. Oddly, nearly everyone bearing the Pancake surname <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pancake_%28surname%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">listed in Wikipedia<\/a> came from West Virginia. So the surname clearly signified something significant along the South Branch of the Potomac River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pennsylvania<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pancake, Pennsylvania (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/8HRupH2MEKmfwPF69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) was a bit more notable. It earned its name in the early 1800&#8217;s. I even found a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pancake History<\/span> [<em>no longer available online<\/em>]. It included an excerpt from the Saturday, April 2, 1955 edition of The Washington Reporter, of Washington, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;An air of mystery hovers around the name of George Pancake, one of the early settlers at the little village of that name just east of Washington. Where he came from, when and what became of him are questions that will probably never be answered. He was here for 12 years, and then drifted on west to Ohio&#8230; In spite of all efforts to change, the name of Pancake has clung to this village through more than 135 years. First it was Williamsburg, then Martinsburg, and finally Laboratory after Dr. Byron Clark secured a post office for his patent medicine mail order business. But, everyone called it Pancake, and Pancake it still is because it struck the popular fancy as the name of America\u2019s most popular breakfast dish.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, visitors <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.triblive.com\/news\/pancakes-roots-planted-along-the-national-road-2\/#axzz3fukSJ8HO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannot buy pancakes<\/a> in Pancake, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pancake, Texas (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Tp3wvCWcbU6Fvocq6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) didn&#8217;t exactly qualify as a booming metropolis either. It was large enough nonetheless, to gain an entry in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/pancake-tx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas Online<\/a> from the Texas State Historical Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Pancake is at the intersection of Farm roads 2955 and 217, thirteen miles northwest of Gatesville in northern Coryell County. A post office opened there in 1884 with John R. Pancake as postmaster&#8230; The population of Pancake was reported as twenty-five from the 1930s through the 1960s. No further estimates were available until 2000 when the population was eleven.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, anytime I uncovered the origins of a town called Pancake it tied back to someone named Pancake. I attempted to find out where the name came from with mixed results. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/name-origin?surname=pancake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ancestry.com<\/a> said it was German: &#8220;Translation of German Pfannkuch(e), North German Pannkoke, Pankauke, or Dutch Pannekoek(e), metonymic occupational names for someone who made and sold pancakes&#8221;. One of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houseofnames.com\/pancake-family-crest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">family crest websites<\/a> &#8212; and yes apparently there was a Pancake family crest &#8212; identified it as Cornish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geographic Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, geographic features named pancake seemed to derive from their appearance. They resembled either a single pancake (i.e., very flat and round) or a stack of pancakes. Pancake Flats was a good example of that principal. Likewise, I found a couple of others that seemed to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pancake Range<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/plant_diversity\/9721301930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5515\/9721301930_601ae6ce0b_b.jpg\" alt=\"Pancake Summit sagebrush steppe. Photo by Matt Lavin; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An entire set of mountains stretching 90 miles (140 kilometres) in the central part of Nevada referenced pancakes: the Pancake Range. That was probably the largest geographic pancake feature anywhere. U.S. Route 50, a stretch once dubbed the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9051\">loneliest road in America<\/a>, crossed directly over the range. It traveled across Pancake Summit (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/1L9FbVnDw7bt1TDTA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) at an elevation of 6,521 feet (1,988 metres).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pancake Bay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/billy_wilson\/4949846529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4128\/4949846529_07f24e2307_b.jpg\" alt=\"Pancake Bay Beach. Photo by Billy Wilson; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There were pancakes in Canada too! I found a nice one in Ontario called Pancake Bay (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/M3kB5SfwHFYXEgmM6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). There was even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontarioparks.com\/park\/pancakebay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Provincial Park<\/a> located on the bay. It included &#8220;3 km of beautiful sand beach and Caribbean blue water.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I&#8217;m hungry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The expression &#8220;Flat as a Pancake&#8221; obviously means something considered extremely flat.
