Was it a geo-oddity or simply an oddity? Would it fit within the subject matter of Twelve Mile Circle? Would some readers find it too bizarre? Ultimately I decided I could focus on a tenuous geographic connection and shoehorn the topic into a suitable article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following list of people and determine their commonality: Richard Nixon, Malcolm X, Andy Warhol, Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud and Joey Ramone. Think about it for a moment if you&#8217;d like or continue reading and let the answer reveal itself. Being a native New Yorker might be helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the answer wasn&#8217;t a list of attendees from the world&#8217;s strangest cocktail party. No, it was something more permanent. Would it help if I mentioned that I was working on <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=15069\">Presidential Death Locations<\/a> when I encountered the list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>They all died at the same hospital.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NewYork\u2013Presbyterian Hospital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tonythemisfit\/2412132691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2203\/2412132691_b0e342ba93_b.jpg\" alt=\"Joey Ramone, Godfather of Punk Rock. Photo by Tony Fischer; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic was morbid enough that I considered saving it for Halloween. However I tried something like that last year and apparently I enjoyed <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=14283\">the resulting article<\/a> a lot more than the Twelve Mile Circle audience. It didn&#8217;t receive much attention and it fell pretty flat, just another example demonstrating my inability to predict audience reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, a big list of famous people <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NewYork-Presbyterian_Hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all died at the same hospital<\/a> in New York City (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Gqm6ciX8UfP8wCwK6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). I found that fascinating. Maybe some of you did too, maybe the rest of you did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I discovered two more salient points as I continued with my research. First, Wikipedia produced some rather remarkable lists when I searched it for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=wikipedia+notable+hospital+deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notable hospital deaths.<\/a>&#8221; Admittedly, I stole liberally from Wikipedia because nobody had yet created a definitive collection of celebrity deaths sorted by hospital (and here I though <em>everything<\/em> was available on the Intertubes). Second, very few hospitals had a meaningful collection of notable deaths. Clusters were confined to places where famous people of various stripes congregated during their lifetimes, limited primarily to New York City and the greater Los Angeles area. That made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City, New York<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/boston_public_library\/8094081317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8325\/8094081317_017a5ab95f_b.jpg\" alt=\"Wendell Wilkie campaigns in Mass. Public Domain photo posted by Boston Public Library \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lenox Hill Hospital (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/FqHkYNudiS2Ds6Qk8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>), a teaching hospital for various universities and also in Manhattan, began in the 19th Century as the German Dispensary. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenox_Hill_Hospital#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">name changed<\/a> to Lenox Hill during the First World War. Back then it was fashionable to whitewash every possible connection to Germany no matter how remote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lenox Hill didn&#8217;t have quite the eclectic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenox_Hill_Hospital#Deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pedigree<\/a> of notable deaths as displayed by NewYork\u2013Presbyterian. But it still had a pretty impressive spread including Wendell Willkie, Ed Sullivan, Alvin Ailey, Alger Hiss and Nipsey Russell (politician, showman, dancer, spy and comedian).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, California<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8914859296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8254\/8914859296_9c811d6557_b.jpg\" alt=\"Walt Disney Statue. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite predictably, celebrity deaths at hospitals in the Los Angeles metropolitan area skewed towards show business personalities. Even so that still provided a wide spectrum. Case in point, if one were to consider a fictional dinner party in the afterlife, imagine a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Providence_Saint_Joseph_Medical_Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guest list<\/a> including Walt Disney, Corey Haim, John Ritter, and Ronnie James Dio. They all passed away at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/XYz8SMFYAjL55p3WA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The location was particularly convenient for Walt Disney as he sought treatment for lung cancer. The hospital was directly across the street from Walt Disney Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ritter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Ritter<\/a> had the added distinction of being born at the hospital and passing away at the same place 54 years later. I imagine the list of celebrities who arrived into this world and departed for the great beyond at the same location must be rather short. That&#8217;s your 12MC trivia for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sizemore\/2626168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3\/2626168_a9bf1cf0b0.jpg\" alt=\"003la (Ernest Borgnine Star). Photo by Mike Atherton; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oddly enough, Twelve Mile Circle featured Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ikwLmDySZgrJZr8N8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) in a previous article, <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=13947\">Comedy Duos<\/a>, that focused on the intersection of two streets, Burns and Allen. As I noted at the time, &#8220;The intersection&#8217;s full name was N George Burns Road and Gracie Allen Drive. Burns and Allen were major benefactors of the hospital.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cedars-Sinai was dubbed &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/cedars-sinai-hospital-354462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hollywood&#8217;s Glamour Hospital<\/a>&#8221; by the Hollywood Reporter. Its list of celebrity patients stretched for pages and naturally some of them <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cedars-Sinai_Medical_Center#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">never recovered<\/a>. Groucho Marx, Andy Kaufman, Eazy-E, Frank Sinatra, and Ernest Borgnine all spent their final moments there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A weird pattern emerged as I researched an article a couple of months ago and I wasn&#8217;t sure what to do with it.
