Maybe I should credit Google Map&#8217;s auto-completion function for the suggestion after I typed the brewery name into an address bar. It noted that at least one town of Confluence existed. A quick check of the Geographic Names Information System uncovered two more although the occurrences in Kentucky (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/FyCEy3FGJ86mcG4W6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) and Alabama (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Rbna8tqS63QtQUsY7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) barely registered as pinpricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pennsylvania&#8217;s Confluence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparison, Pennsylvania&#8217;s Confluence (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/wt23oFSSG26qJPuN8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) was a veritable metropolis, and home to several hundred residents nestled in the hills of the southwestern corner. Confluence was even large enough to justify its own <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitconfluence.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tourism Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/17067026750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8790\/17067026750_a68dc27916_b.jpg\" alt=\"The river confluence that gave the town of Confluence, Pennsylvania its name. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The primary confluence in Confluence, Pennsylvania<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Confluence, the town, recognized a couple of distinct riverine confluences. First, Laurel Hill Creek flowed into the Casselman River. A few hundred feet later a slightly-enlarged Casselman River flowed into the Youghiogheny River. Truly this town of Confluence represented the facts on the ground. Confluence, the village, offered a gateway to a confluence of interesting historic and geographic features within remarkably close proximity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/focusc\/4256319874\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2791\/4256319874_c87ce34022_b.jpg\" alt=\"Fallingwater. Photo by Chun-Hung Eric Cheng; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Frank Lloyd Wright&#8217;s Fallingwater<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fallingwater.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fallingwater<\/a> (aka the Kaufmann Residence) &#8212; Frank Lloyd Wright&#8217;s 1935 architectural masterpiece &#8212; perched on a hillside nearby. This was arguably one of the most visually recognizable homes ever built, an iconic symbol certainly within the United States and perhaps beyond. The unusual cantilever design constructed over a natural waterfall has been hailed as a masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesser known, Wright designed another home only seven miles (11 km) away, <a href=\"https:\/\/kentuckknob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kentuck Knob<\/a> (aka the Hagan House). This property remains a private home, owned by Lord and Lady Palumbo of the United Kingdom who reside there part of the year. It has become available for limited tours only recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Great Allegheny Passage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/16634372203\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7634\/16634372203_647885c094_b.jpg\" alt=\"Through the woods on the Great Allegheny Passage. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The GAP Trail near Confluence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gaptrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Great Allegheny Passage<\/a> bicycle and walking trail blazed directly through Confluence. This <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.railstotrails.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rails-to-Trails<\/a> project followed the paths of several lines abandoned by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, Union Railroad and Western Maryland Railway. Someone could bike 150 miles (240 km) from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland on the Great Allegheny Passage, and from there pick-up the C&amp;O Canal Towpath all the way to Washington, DC, stretching the ride to more than 330 miles (530 km).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: I <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=15891\">biked the length of the GAP trail<\/a> in 2015!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maryland-Pennsylvania-West Virginia Tripoint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d376155.96003944665!2d-79.74493687738828!3d39.721079030246074!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x0%3A0x0!2zMznCsDQzJzE1LjkiTiA3OcKwMjgnMzYuMCJX!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1590876197109!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials drew artificial lines all over the eastern side of the continent during Colonial times and tweaked those boundaries in the early years of the newly-independent United States. That resulted in a tripoint for the current states of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia very near where Confluence later grew. The MDPAWV Tripoint should be a readily-approachable waypoint for those fascinated by borders and boundaries. It maintained additional historic significance as a marker along the famed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mason%E2%80%93Dixon_line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mason-Dixon Line<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pennsylvania Highpoint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/daveynin\/812612765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1069\/812612765_92f1468c0a_b.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Davis Observation deck. Photo by daveynin; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Mount Davis Observation Tower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As an added bonus, nearby Mount Davis marked the highest point of elevation for Pennsylvania at 3213 feet (979 m). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/mount-davis\/151425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summit Post<\/a> said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Views from the top are nice, especially with the very tall observation tower, that allows for expansive views in all directions. You are surrounded by mountains, and you can also see modern wind turbines on a nearby ridge.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For a lazy highpointer such as myself, I noticed that a visitor could drive almost all the way to the very top and reach the summit with a short, easy hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that I&#8217;ve considered it more, I think I&#8217;ll have to put Confluence on my list for a long weekend. This should be a feasible itinerary for anyone living in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
