{"id":14544,"date":"2014-01-14T19:30:51","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T00:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=14544"},"modified":"2021-11-24T07:15:02","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T12:15:02","slug":"georgia-enigma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/georgia-enigma\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia&#8217;s Enigma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A couple of earlier topics conglomerated conceptually in my mind to create my recent fascination with the U.S. state of Georgia&#8217;s Enigma. I discovered Enigma &#8212; it&#8217;s an actual town in Georgia that has about 1,200 residents &#8212; as I researched <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=14473\">Shaped Like it Sounds (Street Edition)<\/a>. Enigma contained an Ell Street, which indeed resembled the letter L in certain orientations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m25!1m12!1m3!1d851.261665101927!2d-83.3303454213819!3d31.41284048444134!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m10!3e0!4m4!2s31.413249%2C%20-83.330106!3m2!1d31.413248999999997!2d-83.330106!4m3!3m2!1d31.412543999999997!2d-83.3295!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1586820952888!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I noted in that earlier article that &#8220;Ell was the most common Letter-Shape road&#8221; although I failed to mention the Enigma example intentionally. I was preoccupied by the notion of Enigma so I set the topic aside for further exploration. Naturally I didn&#8217;t want to spoil the surprise by drawing attention to it prematurely. Enigma reminded me of <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=4923\">Colorado&#8217;s Paradox<\/a>, another place with a puzzling name. Paradox had an interesting history. I imagined Enigma hid an equally compelling origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Puzzle to Name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Georgia.gov<\/span> [<em>link no longer works<\/em>] explained, &#8220;Enigma earned its somewhat odd moniker when settlement founder John A. Ball quipped that he found it &#8216;a puzzle to name [the town] anyway.'&#8221; That wasn&#8217;t much to go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several other sources amplified the explanation by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enigma,_Georgia\" target=\"_blank\">claiming that<\/a> an earlier incarnation had been called Gunn-and-Weston. Townspeople didn&#8217;t consider that a suitable name for a village with potential. Residents proposed Lax and Enigma, and Georgia state officials endorsed Enigma. Lax already belonged to another town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/photos\/61278305@N00\/223260611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/80\/223260611_047e8894a6_b.jpg\" alt=\"Enigma, Georgia 31749. Photo by Jimmy Emerson, DVM; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Enigma Post Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Enigma earned its name and it later incorporated as a formal town. It gained a wonderful circular boundary as was so delightfully common in Georgia at the time, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2Bs4AAAAIAAJ&amp;dq=enigma+georgia&amp;pg=PA749&amp;hl=en#v=onepage&amp;q=enigma%20georgia&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts Passed by the General Assembly of Georgia &#8211; 1906<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Sec 2. Be it further enacted by the aforesaid authority, That the corporate limits of said town of Enigma shall be as follows: One mile in a circle from the center of where the dirt road crosses the Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company in the town of Enigma in every direction therefrom.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Enigma looked to be one of those little towns that many people think of as stereotypically &#8220;All American.&#8221; Photographic evidence seemed to support that, such as the image linked above and from other sources such as Brian Brown&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vanishingsouthgeorgia.com\/tag\/enigma-ga\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vanishing South Georgia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mundane explanation behind the name left me wanting, though. Essentially, some guy in an off-hand remark a hundred-plus years ago noted that it was hard to name a town. That was about the extent of it. I guess residents were lucky he hadn&#8217;t suggested Stumped, Brain Freeze or Writer&#8217;s Block instead. So, Enigma it was and Enigma it remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Firecracker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With that mystery solved and with plenty of white space remaining to be filled in the article, I turned my attention to Enigma&#8217;s enigmas, of which there were plenty. Enigma had no shortage of perplexing situations. For instance, what about <a href=\"https:\/\/allevents.in\/enigma\/2013-miss-enigma-firecracker-pageant\/325292210922751#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miss Enigma Firecracker<\/a>? I&#8217;d found an interesting twist on a beauty pageant where participants could dress only in &#8220;patriotic wear&#8221; with a 4th of July theme (&#8220;NO FLIPPERS, PAGEANT DRESSES, or HAIR PIECES&#8221;). This covered infants through adults, including any Miss who might actually be a Mrs., as long as she was not older than 25. Actually I guess it didn&#8217;t seem all that enigmatic other than the title, Miss Enigma Firecracker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stoner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1702.5549492582163!2d-83.33227534415758!3d31.41109805967379!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x88ee1e7e7710b9f7%3A0xa248f61ccd602a34!2sStoner%20Cir%2C%20Enigma%2C%20GA%2031749!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1586821733465!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stoner Circle, on the other hand, was genuinely strange. In conformance with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Stoner%20circle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Dictionary definition<\/a>, the street seemed utterly dazed and confused. It appeared on several major online mapping applications but it disappeared on the ground when viewed through Google&#8217;s satellite mode. Go ahead and toggle back-and-forth from map to satellite. Somewhere a resident on Stoner Circle chuckles as he munches Cheetos, while everyone guided there by GPS wonders &#8220;<em>hey dude, what happened to the street?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One More Enigma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/wvMxmKPGNXbbWX346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/deaf-cemetery-enigma-georgia.png\" alt=\"Enigma Cemetery, Georgia, USA; via Google Street View, June 2013\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Enigma Cemetery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, why would a deaf child need to play in a cemetery?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in case you were wondering&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d6805.70319866598!2d-83.12591781159949!3d31.473268203160423!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x88f1d858a4653911%3A0xac809e3e9c8af48e!2sLax%2C%20GA%2031650!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1586822074884!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town of Lax didn&#8217;t exactly take off either.
