That means it must be time once again for Odds and Ends, my recurring series of features and topics not quite large enough to fill an entire article on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of interesting items came to my attention via the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheReal12MC\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@TheReal12MC<\/a> Twitter account, undoubtedly an increasingly important way to share geo-oddities. The first one was a tweet from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wikitravel\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@wikitravel<\/a> that linked to an article in <em>Travel and Leisure<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International Zip-line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/trip-ideas\/new-zipline-connects-spain-and-portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A zip-line now connects Spain and Portugal<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d12665.872462520501!2d-7.476867833179859!3d37.473278337222276!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0xd106a3a342e0bb9%3A0x1b43b1224d48f6e9!2sLimitezero!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1594815010344!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one struck a lot of my interests simultaneously. First, it was a zip-line. Need I say more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limitezero.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">L\u00edmite Zero<\/a> made the adventure so much more interesting though. The line crosses the Guadiana River, the international border between Spain and Portugal. Even better, the two nations are located in different time zones. Adventurers go back in time by an hour as they zip from east to west. At the far end in Portugal, riders then take a ferry for the return trip to Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A zip line, an international border, a time zone anomaly and a ferry? I need to include this adventure near the top of my international travel plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Twelve Mile Indiana Redux<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clarker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@Clarker<\/a> sent a tweet <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10150761970154384&amp;set=pb.218750354383.-2207520000.1384864337.&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with a photo<\/a> that he found from Twelve Mile, Indiana. I&#8217;ve simulated the approximate scene in Google Street View.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1640728556886!6m8!1m7!1s8_CLZO68l7W24KnTqh0uJg!2m2!1d40.86629949975836!2d-86.22533654594253!3f127.178335649896!4f-0.9696060472072361!5f3.325193203789971\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That brought back some great memories. Twelve Mile, Indiana, <a href=\"blog\/?p=78\">made an appearance<\/a> in the very early days of 12MC. It&#8217;s the renowned location of the annual Twelve Mile 500 lawnmower race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giant Arrow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I also received input from a more traditional route, the 12MC email box. Case in point, &#8220;Joe&#8221; sent an article link, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.messynessychic.com\/2013\/11\/15\/the-forgotten-giant-arrows-that-guide-you-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Forgotten Giant Arrows that Guide you Across America<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/auvet\/44810759904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1966\/44810759904_fbd01cf48c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Site 32 SL-O Intermediate Field Arrow. Photo by Jimmy Emerson, DVM; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Concrete Aviation Arrow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a fascinating story focused at the intersection of the U.S. Postal Service and the early days of flight in the 1920&#8217;s. As the article explained, &#8220;&#8230; <em>the federal government funded enormous concrete arrows to be built every 10 miles or so along established airmail routes to help the pilots trace their way across America in bad weather conditions and particularly at night, which was a more efficient time to fly<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of those arrows continued to exist nearly a century later, as confirmed by a <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/w75PotHewTp2AC668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Satellite Image<\/a> for a location near Hurricane, Utah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can never predict when an article will become popular. I&#8217;m almost certain that I noticed these same arrows in another article from a different source several years ago. This time however it seemed to catch-on with the public. I&#8217;ve now seen several other people reference the giant arrows although Joe was the first to tell me about it so I&#8217;m giving him credit for passing it along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Heterodox Paradox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reader &#8220;Nigel&#8221; had a question and it confounded me as well. I would have created an entire article around it if I could have solved the mystery. Reluctantly, I&#8217;ll turn it over to the 12MC community to see if anyone out there may be able to provide an explanation for the mysterious and repeated appearance of Heterodox View Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d715.6232431977295!2d-95.507827!3d29.805425!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8640c44e37710739%3A0xee0194ae5b06c8e5!2sHeterodox%20View%20Ave%2C%20Houston%2C%20TX%2077080!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1594815914350!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigel asked, &#8220;<em>I noticed this odd street name first as what appears to be a driveway behind a hospital in Houston. But when typing it into Google Maps, I see others all over the country. Any guesses what this could be a reference to?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found the same thing. Heterodox View Avenue &#8212; and it was always Heterodox View <em>Avenue<\/em>; not street, not drive, not boulevard, only avenue &#8212; appeared in various random places throughout the United States. Only rarely did it run through a residential neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally it led either to a park or to a shopping center. Often it seemed to be cloaked, not necessarily appearing as a named street in Google and seemingly more an access road. Nigel&#8217;s example followed a similar pattern. The avenue ran along the edge of the hospital parking lot and next to a helicopter pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heterodoxy refers to beliefs that are out of alignment with prevailing opinions or interpretations, often religious. The term also turns up in the vocabulary of economists. Thus, a heterodox view would be considered unorthodox or unconventional, although not so extreme as to be heresy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I considered this an odd choice for a street name at the very least. In addition, the use of Heterodox View Avenue (and only avenue) seemed too coincidental; a single individual or organization must have had a hand in it. However I could not find any logical connection between the occurrences. That disappointed me because I think there could be an interesting story hidden behind those heterodox views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you everyone for the great suggestions.
