Sesame Workshop, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So how many people in the 12MC audience remember that infectious little theme song from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sesamestreet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sesame Street<\/a>? I guess it signifies people of a certain age and location. However, variations do exist around the world <a href=\"https:\/\/muppet.fandom.com\/wiki\/International_Sesame_Street\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a> Vila S\u00e9samo (Brazil), Plaza S\u00e9samo (Mexico), Sesamstra\u00dfe (Germany), Sesamstraat (Netherlands), Rue S\u00e9same (France), Barrio S\u00e9samo (Spain), Svenska Sesam (Sweden) and Rechov Sumsum (Israel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Right There in Richmond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3164.7386286399765!2d-77.60371848488845!3d37.51408227980771!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89b16d0cb1ea2ea7%3A0xe2efad6cd9c5e208!2sSesame%20St%2C%20Bon%20Air%2C%20VA%2023235!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1632085120346!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would Sesame Street come to mind after multiple decades removed from my childhood? Even my <em>children<\/em> are too old for Sesame Street now. It happened when I noticed that <a href=\"https:\/\/vpm.org\/watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WCVE<\/a> &#8212; the Public Broadcasting Service television and radio station for Central Virginia &#8212; was located at 23 Sesame St, Richmond, VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s right, a PBS station on Sesame Street. Perfect. Sesame Street, the show, began its association with public television at its debut in 1969. It remains a staple of educational programming for preschoolers even today. So WCVE chose to honor that history by naming the access road leading up to its broadcast facility after Sesame Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus it&#8217;s not the only one. WLVT, the PBS station for Pennsylvania&#8217;s Lehigh Valley sits at 839 Sesame Street in  Bethlehem, PA (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/5WTGnXHuRyhTKNJT8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Few More Sesames<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3452.651150416475!2d-81.89680828510089!3d30.075532481871033!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x88e5e7c6a32218ed%3A0xc3eb0a5b7c762005!2sSesame%20St%20%26%20Hemp%20Ct%2C%20Middleburg%2C%20FL%2032068!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1632085610228!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can safely assume that any PBS television station located on a Sesame Street happened deliberately. But are there other instances of intentional homage? I discovered a handful of possibilities although it was more likely to be coincidental. Then I found a few unrelated oddities amongst the numerous standalone Sesame Streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Middleburg, Florida: here Sesame Street intersects with Hemp Court. What?!? Talk about a mixed message. They combined children&#8217;s television with a drug reference. Just say no, Cookie Monster! It all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mQE0LQFFn3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suddenly makes sense<\/a>, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/li><li>Skowhegan, Maine (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/TLEUFsavcsuxJhH68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): This naming was intentional. Sesame Street and Big Bird Street serve as paths through a trailer park. 12MC <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3915\">loves trailer parks<\/a>. They are never afraid to use street names that would be completely unacceptable in more uppity neighborhoods.<\/li><li>Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/rLqWtiCy8qSSQEVc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): This offered a more typical example of a genre of subdivisions named for herbs and spices. I found several instances scattered around the nation. This one included peppercorn, tarragon, nutmeg, curry, thyme, marjoram, parsley, celery, paprika, cayenne, and of course sesame, with a neighborhood bisected by Spice Drive. It offered a veritable spice rack combined within a single, compact housing development.<\/li><li>Opa-lacka, Florida (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/zxjpepiKc2mXW6oc9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): I found an unusual neighborhood with an Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves \/ Arabian Nights kind-of theme. Naturally I&#8217;ll assume that Sesame in this context referred to &#8220;Open Sesame.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Even Australia!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ihtEYe2AZLKNXv789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/sesame-street-australia.png\" alt=\"Intersection of Sesame Ernie Oscar. Screen Print from Google Street View; November 2009.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>None of those were my favorite examples, though. For that, I had to cast my eyes towards Australia. Apparently Sesame Street had <a href=\"https:\/\/televisionau.com\/2011\/01\/40-years-at-sesame-street.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">run for decades<\/a> on Australian television in an undiluted form, with Americanized Muppet characters rather than something customized specifically for the Australian market. I think they may have even used original voices rather than dubbing them with an Australian accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can any 12MC readers from Australia think back to their childhoods and confirm that? I based my guess on one of the comments from the article I linked (&#8220;<em>A generation of Australian children have grown up unsure if z is pronounced zee or zed<\/em>&#8220;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the wonderful Street View image I captured at the intersection of Sesame Street, Ernie Street and Oscar Crescent! There can be no mistake. Someone named those streets intentionally for characters on the television program.
