I keep writing steadily and in the process I run into several more morsels that go onto a never-ending pile. It appears I&#8217;ve created a perpetual motion machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m going to do something I haven&#8217;t done in a very long time. I&#8217;ll featuring some obscure and beloved websites. The last time I devoted an entire article to something like this happened all the way back in <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3657\">March 2010<\/a>. Even then I did it with some trepidation. Websites come-and-go. Those recommended by 12MC don&#8217;t seem to fare well after I mention them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, I&#8217;m pretty sure a 12MC endorsement becomes pretty much a death knell. Nonetheless, the sites I&#8217;ll feature seem to be well established with prospects of longevity. Maybe we&#8217;ll break the curse. Either way, at least I can place check marks next to three entries on my overflowing topic list in a single shot and call them done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Odd Wisconsin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/9490287574\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3706\/9490287574_dcfa67df64_b.jpg\" alt=\"Madison, Wisconsin; State Capitol. This blog appeared to have disappeared when checked in August 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wisconsin Historical Society publishes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Odd Wisconsin<\/a> in blog format about once a week, beginning about a year ago. It hits on three of my interests: geography; history and weirdness. As they note, their mission is to &#8220;Amuse, surprise, perplex, astonish, and otherwise connect you with your past.&#8221; They &#8220;lower a bucket into the depths of Wisconsin history and bring to light curious fragments of forgotten lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That bucket has been lowered into some rather interesting places. I&#8217;ve learned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Madison area &#8212; the site of the state capital since 1836 &#8212; was once described as &#8220;not fit for any civilized nation of people to inhabit.&#8221;<\/li><li>Wisconsin and beer go hand-in-hand, and several American brewing empires traced their origin to the state. Nonetheless beer almost became illegal during the early years of statehood. Voters passed a prohibition referendum in 1853. It failed only because the state legislature didn&#8217;t endorse it.<\/li><li>One area almost became Petersylvania; no, not Pennsylvania, <em>Petersylvania<\/em> after Rev. Samuel Peters.<\/li><li>The town of Dekorra seemed poised by geographic happenstance to become a major settlement like Madison or Milwaukee. Never heard of it? Exactly.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridge Hunter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kenspix\/49179674\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/30\/49179674_a9388a7605_b.jpg\" alt=\"trestle looking down. Photo by Ken Ratcliff; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Niobrara River Cowboy Trail Bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I could get lost on <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgehunter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bridgehunter.com<\/a> for days, just drilling down randomly on the 30,000+ bridges contained on its pages. Contributors add bunches of new ones to the site every day. Almost three hundred vertical lift bridges? Simply mind-blowing. I could also feast on 600+ tunnels or nearly a hundred ferries if I ever grew tired of bridges, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s try it out. Say, I want to see <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgehunter.com\/ne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only Nebraska bridges<\/a> and then select <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgehunter.com\/ne\/cherry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cherry County<\/a> from the clickable map. The <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgehunter.com\/ne\/cherry\/bh47876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Niobrara River Cowboy Trail Bridge<\/a> looks promising, and there it appears with five photographs, a Google Street View image, lat\/long coordinates and various vital statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like that, I learned about an old Chicago &amp; Northwestern railroad trestle (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/jLgNczZX4387MeDq6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) converted to pedestrian use as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bikecowboytrail.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cowboy Trail<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railstotrails.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rails-to-Trails<\/a> project. Now I&#8217;ll have something interesting to do when I visit Nebraska&#8217;s largest county.  I saw thousands of possibilities like that simply waiting to be discovered on the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder if the website attracts the wrong crowd sometimes. The URL is only a single letter away from Bride Hunter. Lonely-hearts with bad typing skills in search of mail order spouses might arrive on the site only to leave disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virginia Places<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/veramar-vineyard.jpg\" alt=\"Veramar Vineyard Berryville, Virginia. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><figcaption>12MC Visits Lots of Virginia Places<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiaplaces.org\/\">Virginia Places<\/a> as a reference for years. It is copyright \u00a9 1998-2013 so I guess the owner continues to maintain its content even thought the formatting seems to be stuck in 1998. Virginia Places serves as a reference for a geography class at George Mason University (<a href=\"https:\/\/cehd.gmu.edu\/courses\/GGS-380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geography of Virginia &#8211; GGS380<\/a>) so signs look promising for it to stick around for awhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The index page includes that annoying, anonymous Virginia quote that one sees scattered throughout the Commonwealth: &#8220;To be a Virginian either by Birth, Marriage, Adoption, or even on one&#8217;s Mother&#8217;s side is an Introduction to any State in the Union, a Passport to any Foreign Country, and a Benediction from Above.&#8221; Whatever. I&#8217;ll forgive Virginia Places for that brief transgression because I like leafing through the rest of its pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Completely Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember last year when <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12862\">I served as a chauffeur<\/a> for someone participating in the Dust Bowl Marathon Series? My participant selected the half-marathon option, so she&#8217;s only half-crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wants to do it again. This time it will involve the <a href=\"https:\/\/mainlymarathons.com\/series-3\/riverboat\/\">Riverboat Marathon Series<\/a> (Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana), April 12-16, 2014. That gives all of you plenty of time to get in shape and join us for one or more of the races.
