Photo by Anders Sandberg; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I happened to pop onto the 12MC <a href=\"https:\/\/clustrmaps.com\/map\/Howderfamily.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clustr Map<\/a> as I like to do occasionally because I&#8217;m strange like that and I enjoy watching visitor statistics in real time, and a certain placename caught my eye: Random Lake, Wisconsin. It seemed &#8212; and you knew where I&#8217;d take this &#8212; so incredibly random. &#8220;Where do you live?&#8221; &#8220;<em>Oh, a random lake in Wisconsin<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d23131.6291483167!2d-87.97437796481019!3d43.555429613963895!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8804916905039f25%3A0xeeacb8b8509b0289!2sRandom%20Lake%2C%20WI%2053075!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1617139516148!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randomlakewi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a real place<\/a> (&#8220;The Southwest Gateway to Sheboygan&#8221;) with fifteen-hundred residents and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randomlake.k12.wi.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">own school district<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/randomlakefiredept.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fire department<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/read.timesprintingdigital.com\/i\/123978-visitor-guide\/0?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visitors guide<\/a> with plays on words like &#8220;a random picture is worth 1,000 words.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guide must have been written by a geo-geek because it started off: &#8220;If map coordinates are your thing, welcome to latitude 43.548783 and longitude -87.959406 &#8212; better known as the Village of Random Lake.&#8221; Why yes, map coordinates are my thing. Thank you, Random Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, for asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally I checked the coordinate and it pointed to the southern edge of Random Lake on Russel Drive between Lake View Park and some random house, probably the author&#8217;s residence. Someone should probably go knock on his or her random door and ask about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheboygan, since it came up, derived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meadpl.org\/history-name-sheboygan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from the Chippewa language<\/a> although its meaning wasn&#8217;t known precisely. It could mean something that&#8217;s hollow or able to be pierced, or the object doing the piercing. It could be a reed or pipe stem, or it could be an awl or needle. Also it could be something different entirely. It&#8217;s not a she-boy so don&#8217;t even go there. I don&#8217;t run one of those kinds of websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other U.S. Settlements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Random settlements were much more unusual than I anticipated. They were quite sporadic, or one might even say random. The US <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geographic Names Information System<\/a> listed only seven additional random populated places, and they all were less significant than Random Lake. I&#8217;ve included them for reference with linked maps using coordinates specified by GNIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Florida<\/strong>: Random Oaks (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/hRpKQv2XcqaakSnk9\">map<\/a>)<\/li><li><strong>North Carolina<\/strong>: Random Woods (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/6cqzFYpdaHG8jtKj7\">map<\/a>); another Random Woods (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/r76DJo6jfHijXhY2A\">map<\/a>); still another Random Woods (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xFsUUTGe8Gtfvcfa6\">map<\/a>); plus Random Hills (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/wM3NGEs1EYVFdqSt9\">map<\/a>)<\/li><li><strong>Virginia<\/strong>: Random Hills (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/9QdPuvpqxuqs6v5h6\">map<\/a>)<\/li><li><strong>Maryland<\/strong>: Random Heights (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/H9iSVKdW33uCUzt99\">map<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That North Carolina Cluster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly events appeared entirely less random. What about that unusual clustering in the Mid-Atlantic, particularly in North Carolina? Was it a random collection of Random places or did it represent something more nefarious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m30!1m8!1m3!1d826774.113088496!2d-79.903631!3d35.957087!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m19!3e0!4m5!1s0x885328d93f31f55b%3A0x70be4169b3eb3fcb!2sRandom%20Hills%2C%20Boone%20Station%2C%20NC%2027215!3m2!1d36.0781912!2d-79.5194674!4m5!1s0x88531a5611df2da5%3A0x2aad4f653e500e70!2sRandom%20Woods%2C%201805%20Fairfax%20Rd%2C%20Greensboro%2C%20NC%2027407!3m2!1d36.04457!2d-79.873395!4m5!1s0x88539713627b7b51%3A0x4189e1baef144c81!2sRandom%20Woods%2C%20228%20Longbranch%20Trail%2C%20Lexington%2C%20NC%2027295!3m2!1d35.862735799999996!2d-80.2885735!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1617140311378!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did it seem logical that three of eight Random populated places in the United States should be found along a 60 mile (95 kilometre) stretch of Interstate 85, extending from Lexington to Greensboro to Burlington? I tried to discern a logical pattern. They best I could conclude was that they all seemed to have a similar mid-1960&#8217;s to mid-1970&#8217;s suburban architectural feel to them. They all featured mostly small, single-story houses of a familiar style. Could the hand of a common developer have been involved? If so, the developer had either an odd sense of humor or a complete lack of originality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I noticed Greensboro, NC&#8217;s Random was ringed by Fairfax Road. Did the developer also have a connection to Random Hills in Virginia, located in Fairfax County directly adjacent to the City of Fairfax? I think we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1572498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may need Jesse Ventura<\/a> to sort this one out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada didn&#8217;t escape from random silliness either<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d170381.94499241147!2d-53.873782994591046!3d48.14460439061338!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4b747e1c95b4a231%3A0xbfadf44ea321f21b!2sRandom%20Island!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1617140496972!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can I just say how much I love Newfoundland and Labrador? NL is to Canada as Delaware is to the United States: pound-for-pound, they both seem to have more geo-oddities per square kilometre\/mile than any other areas of their respective countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.rncan.gc.ca\/search-place-names\/search?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Geographical Names Data Base<\/a> contained very few random reference, generally associated with Random Island located off of the east coast of Newfoundland. Random Heights was the predominant random neighbourhood (which CGNDB defined as an &#8220;unincorporated urban place&#8221;). It seemed to be an extension of the <a href=\"https:\/\/clarenville.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Town of Clarenville<\/a> albeit just outside of its formal limits (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/imKvN11ZLREDdaLD7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">route<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less So in Australia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I also checked Australia. There weren&#8217;t any random towns although Australia had a Random Swamp (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/x6rq4bHuYrfMNRj16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).
