{"id":13713,"date":"2013-07-14T12:49:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-14T17:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=13713"},"modified":"2022-04-10T05:18:19","modified_gmt":"2022-04-10T10:18:19","slug":"thata-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/thata-way\/","title":{"rendered":"He Went Thata Way"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One little neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada fills me with such joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d805.0257805089075!2d-115.07278551994544!3d36.18837381850271!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c8dcc04f44bd07%3A0x267ba8a14aad1b7f!2sThata%20Way%2C%20Las%20Vegas%2C%20NV!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615718312873!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It first came to my attention for <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=13555\">Supreme Court<\/a> and then played a starring role as Curdsen Way in <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=13633\">Little Miss Muffet<\/a>. Now it&#8217;s inspired me a final time with Thata Way. It&#8217;s pure geo-oddity gold. I&#8217;ve pretty well exhausted the neighborhood, though. I&#8217;ll spare readers an article on its sole remaining street, Better Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searches led to several distinct categorizations of the various Ways. I can&#8217;t guarantee I found every instance available, and in fact I&#8217;ll bet that I&#8217;ve missed piles of wonderful examples. Google Maps tried to outguess me by presenting results after geolocating my IP address. I suspected that people in other parts of the United States or in other parts of the world would see something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cute and Social<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idiomatic use of thisa and thata so reminiscent of vintage cinematic cowboy Westerns of generations past, fell into neat little neighborhood clusters, often combined with other unusual Ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dKAzhex5jFoShz4E7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/thata-whicha-california.png\" alt=\"Corner of Whicha Way and Thata Way in Hemet California. Image from Google Street View; May 2012.\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Whicha Way and Thata Way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Silverado, CA (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/jbiqXm9kVGS87WzR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): Thisa Way; Thata Way; Whila Way; Hidea Way and Bytha Way.<\/li><li>Hemet, CA (photo above): Thisa Way; Thata Way and Whicha Way.<\/li><li>Shelby, NC (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/PPJ9nv2rP4GsxzBk8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): Thisa Way and Thata Way, although it got extra credit for having a completely distinct and standalone Bytha Way more than a mile and a half removed!<\/li><li>Toledo, WA (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/baoe7z4XW12XM6Gg7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): Thisa Way, by itself.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These all formed into a category I called &#8220;cute and social.&#8221; They were meant to be amusing and whimsical. I&#8217;m not sure whether someone living on Bytha Way would necessarily endorse that sentiment (by the way) although I believe the developers had good intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cute and Social With Correct Spelling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I noticed a similar theme without the extraneous letter &#8220;a&#8221; appended. Here, for example, thisa became this and thata became that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/osLpsYCWdx3eRpmp6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/which-right-way-texas.png\" alt=\"Corner of Which Way and Right Way in Houston Texas. Image from Google Street View; June 2011.\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Which Way and Right Way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Houston, TX (photo above): This Way; That Way; Right Way; Same Way; Which Way; Straight Way; My Way and Any Way.<\/li><li>Knik-Fairview, AK (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/N3Tm7WUR24BnAiVC8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>): This Way; That Way and the inexplicable <em>Finally Here<\/em>.<\/li><li>Pharr, TX (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/oe9FfP32Y6c3mPwN7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): This Way, That Way, Any Way, Merry Way, Which Way, Every Way, Lovely Way, Funny Way, and then it started getting lame with a bunch of citrus-themed Ways. It also earned a bonus for the adjacent neighborhood to the south with the Wizard of Oz theme (Scare Crow; Tinman; Lion; Dorothy, and Yellow Brick).<\/li><li>Citrus Heights, CA (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/mxMqvu54sdd6QDsS7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>): This Way, by itself.<\/li><li>Santee, CA (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/SPkcWRwxE2dVyMUCA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>): Our Way probably deserves at least an honorable mention.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I called this category &#8220;cute and social, with correct spelling.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standoffish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the humor started taking a slightly standoffish tone and occurrences became more individualized than clustered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/p5KfAC8HgBQvBspeA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/wrong-way-alaska.png\" alt=\"Wrong Way in Salcha Alaska. Image from Google Street View; October 2011.\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Wrong Way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wrong Way: The example from Salcha, Alaska (photo above) is actually Wrong Way <em>Lane<\/em> so I apologize in advance. I wanted to use Wrong Way in Cary, NC, however someone stole the sign and left behind only a bare pole (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/UKwfPzNkfeio18sJ6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>).<\/li><li>Getta Way and Hida Way: There were many of these and I didn&#8217;t feel like cataloging all of them. I guess I should be happy that I didn&#8217;t find Getoutathe Way, although I did uncover Outta Place in Anchorage AK (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/h1WyubBSwF41yiV66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t find Sneaka Way or Slipa Way either. I&#8217;m able to make an exclusive offer to 12MC readers &#8212; be the first person to claim those street names!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Downright Antisocial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came the category for hermits, misfits and survivalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/26BDFF51Y1W9mKZ37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/keepa-way-maine.png\" alt=\"Keepa Way in Gorham Maine. Image from Google Street View; September 2011.\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Keepa Way!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Goa Way: I suppose Goa references could pertain to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goa.gov.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the state in India<\/a> although most of the places seemed to be found in remote locations like Hedgesville, WV (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Cp6PZMpJFrEuyVc46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>). I think it&#8217;s more a warning to possible visitors than an allusion to Portuguese colonialism.<\/li><li>Keepa Way: The best example came from Gorham, ME (photo above). Below the street name, notice the other sign that reads &#8220;private way.&#8221; Another sign nearby specified that drivers should not enter the road because it was one way only. However, checking satellite images, I noted that there was only one way in and only one way out, and that was Keepa Way. Keep away, indeed!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I&#8217;ll wrap up with a complete oddball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d3133.8697030143917!2d-76.51165972883612!3d38.23613072860857!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89b760f05957552f%3A0xc8749f62bc33988a!2sWalk%20This%20Way%2C%202%2C%20Valley%20Lee%2C%20MD%2020634!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615736645167!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even better than Finally Here was Walk This Way. That&#8217;s right, someone in Great Mills, Maryland must have been a Classic Rock fan. What else could explain the naming of a street after Aerosmith&#8217;s 1975 composition, &#8220;Walk This Way,&#8221; unless it was their 1986 collaboration with Run\u2013D.M.C.? Now I have both versions stuck in my head, alternating, and taunting me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RUN DMC - Walk This Way (Official HD Video) ft. Aerosmith\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4B_UYYPb-Gk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>AND last place goes to American Way, not because I have any issue with the American Way conceptually but because it was used so frequently as a street name that it become trite.
