Twelve Mile Circle likes to call that second, subsidiary island an &#8220;island-on-an-island.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beaver Island, Michigan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/michigan\/beaver-island-font-lake.jpg\" alt=\"An unnamed island on Font Lake, on Beaver Island, on Lake Michigan. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><figcaption>An unnamed island on Font Lake, on Beaver Island, on Lake Michigan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23053\">Beaver Island <\/a> is the largest on Lake Michigan. It contains several lowlands, marshy areas, and ponds which makes it a perfect candidate for islands-on-an-island. We found one on the northern part of the island, on Font Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beaver Island Boat Company<\/a>&#8216;s ferry, the &#8220;Emerald Isle&#8221; takes visitors to the island. It runs from Charlevoix, Michigan several times a day. I highly recommend making reservations if crossing with a car during busy months. Additionally, Beaver Island has a small airport if you happen to own a plane. However, no road option exists so it&#8217;s either a boat or a plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d4553.5228723962255!2d-85.55118036744783!3d45.744735979105286!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x0%3A0x0!2zNDXCsDQ0JzQxLjEiTiA4NcKwMzInNDguNSJX!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1619950956127!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This island-on-an-island also appears on Google Maps imagery. Font Lake is easily accessible from Beaver Island&#8217;s primary town, St. James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iceland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/iceland\/tjorn-reykjavik.jpg\" alt=\"Tj\u00f6rnin in Reykjav\u00edk. In the example shown above, the originating island is rather significant: it is the country of Iceland. In this photograph a small island exists on Lake Tj\u00f6rnin in the midst of Iceland&#8217;s capital city, Reykjav\u00edk. This was an interesting aside but hardly significant compared to all the other incredible things <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=24412\">we saw in Iceland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d2845.6034523096523!2d-21.941586!3d64.144259!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1619951343247!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll bet our readers in the United Kingdom know many examples of the island-on-an-island phenomenon. What are some of your favourites?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the next logical extension of this phenomenon would be a lake-on-a-lake-on-a-lake.
