{"id":13488,"date":"2013-06-13T18:30:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T23:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=13488"},"modified":"2021-11-25T10:19:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T15:19:56","slug":"sioux-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/sioux-water\/","title":{"rendered":"That&#8217;s Siouan for Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I noticed an interesting geographic prefix as I explored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverminnedosa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minnedosa<\/a>, Manitoba in <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=13409\">Triple Letter &#8211; Canada<\/a>. The same prefix also applied to one of the individual United States, specifically Minnesota. In both cases the &#8220;Minne&#8221; portion derived from a Siouan word for water. Minnedosa was Flowing Water and Minnesota was Cloudy Water. I wondered if other place names derived from the same watery source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The search began in the upper Midwest of the United States and in the upper Great Plains on both sides of the U.S. &#8211; Canada border where Siouan languages <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siouan_languages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flourished during the pre-contact era<\/a>. Siouan wasn&#8217;t a single language and the Great Sioux Nation was not a single tribe. Three distinct groupings with numerous subgroups formed the Sioux: Lakota, Western Dakota and Eastern Dakota. They all seemed to have a similar term for water, though: Mni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mni<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fmp.cla.umn.edu\/dakota\/browserecord.php?-action=browse&amp;-recid=846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dakota Dictionary Online<\/a> provided an example, &#8220;<em>Mni sni dakta\u00e5 ya\u00e7i\u00e5 he?<\/em>&#8221; &#8212; Would you like a drink of cold water?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lakota used the same word for water. It served as the Lakota Word for the Day on March 21, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"122103LWOTD&quot;mni&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/elHe3KDXqtU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mni seemed to be pronounced closer to MNee. I suppose it shouldn&#8217;t surprise me to learn that modern place names using Mni as a root tended to anglicize its pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, as I dug further, Minnesota turned out to be <a href=\"https:\/\/fmp.cla.umn.edu\/dakota\/browserecord.php?-action=browse&amp;-recid=1631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a little more complicated<\/a> than my original findings. Both variations still tied back to Mni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;There are a variety of opinions about the Dakota word for Minnesota. Some Dakota speakers pronounce the word Mnisota, which can be translated as clear water referring to the Minnesota River. Others say it Mni\u00dfota, or cloudy water, describing the morning mist that rises over the lakes and valleys in Southern Minnesota during the warmer months&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minnehaha<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By far, the most common geographic adaption of Mni as a prefix was Minnehaha. I found Minnehaha in dozens of locations and geographic features on both sides of the border, with many situated well beyond the traditional Siouan range. They were so common that it wasn&#8217;t worth listing them all. It would have taken-up the entire article with 92 occurrences in <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GNIS<\/a> alone, including towns, counties, streams, ponds, islands, schools, churches, parks, and cemeteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>&#8220;And he named her from the river,<br>From the water-fall he named her,<br>Minnehaha, Laughing Water.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can thank Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his 1855 poem, The Song of Hiawatha, for the endless proliferation. Minnehaha was Hiawatha&#8217;s lover in this immensely popular poem and it became fashionable to name things in her honor during the latter 19th Century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Minnehaha was fictional. However Longfellow named her for a real feature: Minnehaha Falls (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/MsAo2tyXZiRxDKdr5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) near Fort Snelling, Minnesota<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/39158515@N05\/6085892581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/6209\/6085892581_3720ee37d4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Minnehaha Falls. Photo by zman z28; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Minnehaha Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Longfellow had been inspired by an image of Minnehaha Falls (not this one, of course). However, he set the poem on Michigan&#8217;s Upper Peninsula, on the southern shores of Lake Superior. Minnehaha did not translate as &#8220;laughing water&#8221; &#8212; contrary to Longfellow&#8217;s misconception &#8212; it actually meant falling water, or waterfall. Minnehaha Falls created a redundancy, a Waterfall Falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mni found its way into several other places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=5XfxzCm1qa4C&amp;lpg=PA286&amp;pg=PA286&amp;hl=en#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as Water plus the Greek term polis, or city. Minneapolis is Water City.<\/li><li>Minnewaukan, North Dakota (and presumably Minnewakan, Manitoba) <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Y-xYAAAAMAAJ&amp;dq=Minnewaukan%20history&amp;pg=PA43#v=onepage&amp;q=Minnewaukan%20history&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as Spirit Water.<\/li><li>Minnetonka, a suburb near Minneapolis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnetonka-history.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as Big Water or Great Water<\/li><li>Minnetrista, Minnesota <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minnetrista,_Minnesota#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as Crooked Water.<\/li><li>Minneiska, MN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississippi-river.org\/our-towns\/minneiska-mn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as White Water, for turbulence at the confluence of the Mississippi and Zumbro rivers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1455467.3064289093!2d-97.10447157799969!3d44.56204821242473!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x878a699667389a3f%3A0xfb25f0407d2b1c3b!2sMinneota%2C%20MN%2056264!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1587598767651!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think my favorite was Minneota, Minnesota. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesnwoods.com\/Minneota.htm#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translated<\/a> as Much Water. That&#8217;s not why I liked it, though. I simply enjoyed the close similarity between Minneota and Minnesota; and it rolled off the tongue nicely. The town seemed to have fun with it too. They can root for their nearest professional American Football team, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vikings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minnesota Vikings<\/a>, <em>and<\/em> their local high school team, the <a href=\"https:\/\/minneota.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minneota Vikings<\/a>. I imagine that football alumni who say they once played for the Minneota Vikings probably don&#8217;t mind when people hear it wrong and assume they played professionally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I noticed an interesting geographic prefix as I explored Minnedosa, Manitoba in Triple Letter &#8211; Canada.
