{"id":13391,"date":"2013-06-02T09:53:35","date_gmt":"2013-06-02T14:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=13391"},"modified":"2021-10-18T18:34:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T23:34:13","slug":"usa-islands-ferry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/usa-islands-ferry\/","title":{"rendered":"How Many Islands in the USA Require Ferry Travel?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Just when I thought I&#8217;d examined domestic ferry routes from every possible angle, and new question arose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longtime 12MC readers already know of my endless fascination with ferries and the saga of my formerly wildly popular <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22346\">ferry pages<\/a>; still somewhat popular albeit Google&#8217;s love affair with them has waned. It&#8217;s a complicated relationship driven in equal parts by curiosity and indifference. I&#8217;m sure <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=13356\">my kvetching<\/a> doesn&#8217;t help me remain in Google&#8217;s good graces either. Eh, could be worse I suppose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Fortunate Query<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, the major search engines drive a lot of ferry-related hits to Twelve Mile Circle. The title of this article came word-for-word directly from one such query, &#8220;<em>how many islands in the USA require ferry travel<\/em>&#8221; Gosh, I don&#8217;t know. I never thought about it. Why would anyone really <em>need<\/em> to know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aeFAQHstrK8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/crosswords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times crossword puzzle<\/a>. I like to figure out weird geography research questions provided unwittingly by random Intertubes surfers that happened to wash ashore on 12MC. Give me a quiet Sunday morning, a big cup of black coffee, some oddball query with no real practical purpose, and turn me loose. <strong><del datetime=\"2013-06-02T22:47:38+00:00\">The answer is 64<\/del> The answer is at least 77<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t believe me? Feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0Ak9jUE8mya8mdEJuNVJsbVk5Q3V2UFFNcGlaVGduV1E&amp;usp=sharing\">check my handiwork<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Quick Count<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I defined the question. I interpreted it to mean that each island had to be disconnected from the external road network, that no bridge, causeway, zip line, rope swing or other structure joined it to the mainland, directly or indirectly. A regularly-scheduled ferry with an established route had to be the only convenient and inexpensive transportation option available to the general public. Sure, someone could always charter a boat or hire an aircraft, and claim that a ferry wasn&#8217;t technically required. In that case the answer would be zero. That&#8217;s no fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asterisks and Caveats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rockland-Vinalhaven Ferry\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DVD4t4RWKXQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s apply some additional asterisks and caveats before the 12MC fact-checkers begin to salivate and prepare their rebuttal comments (which I love by the way). The biggest one: this was a quick eyeball survey and it&#8217;s entirely possible, indeed likely, that I missed a small number of instances in my haste to prepare an answer before the kids woke up this morning and broke my concentration. I even found two more examples and added them to the list just before I hit the Publish button. Don&#8217;t freak out if you find other(s). Let me know and I&#8217;ll update the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, routes do change, generally due to the price of fuel and other financial considerations. I&#8217;ve done my best to compile the list as it existed on June 2, 2013. Someone reading this article far in the future will notice an ever-growing list of additions, deletions and variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breakdown By State<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how ferry-only islands broke down by state (again, look at <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0Ak9jUE8mya8mdEJuNVJsbVk5Q3V2UFFNcGlaVGduV1E&amp;usp=sharing\">the spreadsheet<\/a> if you want the details):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Alaska &#8211; 16<\/li><li>Maine &#8211; 13<\/li><li>Washington &#8211; 9<\/li><li>Michigan &#8211; 8<\/li><li>Massachusetts &#8211; <del datetime=\"2013-06-03T00:41:02+00:00\">3<\/del> 4<\/li><li>New York &#8211; <del datetime=\"2013-06-02T22:46:14+00:00\">2<\/del> 4<\/li><li>California &#8211; <del datetime=\"2013-06-02T22:46:14+00:00\">1<\/del> 3<\/li><li>Ohio &#8211; 3<\/li><li><ins datetime=\"2013-06-04T00:04:48+00:00\">South Carolina &#8211; 3<\/ins><\/li><li><ins datetime=\"2013-06-04T00:04:48+00:00\">Georgia &#8211; 2<\/ins><\/li><li>North Carolina &#8211; 2<\/li><li>Rhode Island &#8211; <del datetime=\"2013-06-02T22:46:14+00:00\">1<\/del> 2<\/li><li>Wisconsin &#8211; 2<\/li><li><ins datetime=\"2013-06-05T00:07:34+00:00\">Delaware &#8211; 1<\/ins><\/li><li>Florida &#8211; 1<\/li><li>Maryland &#8211; 1<\/li><li>Mississippi &#8211; 1<\/li><li><ins datetime=\"2013-06-04T00:04:48+00:00\">New Hampshire &#8211; 1<\/ins><\/li><li>Virginia &#8211; 1<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawaii also <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii_Superferry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">briefly had one<\/a> although it was inter-island and did not connect to the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Assumptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrestled with what should &#8220;count&#8221; as a ferry. Various national and state park properties, or portions of properties, are served solely by ferry: Dry Tortugas National Park; Governors Island National Monument; Gulf Islands National Seashore; Isle Royale National Park; Rock Island (Wisconsin) State Park. Are these ferries or are they excursions? They maintain regular schedules, however they don&#8217;t serve a permanent population unless one considers a few park rangers who live there. I kept them on the list for no other reason than I&#8217;ve taken a ride on a couple of them and I like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1432\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/alaska_juneau_tramway.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Roberts Tramway\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Juneau is NOT an island&#8230; but if feels like one<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaska deserved special attention for its extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/dot.alaska.gov\/amhs\/map.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marine Highway<\/a>. Many coastal towns are not connected to the larger road network even though they are not on islands. Some are remote outposts with too few people to justify the necessary road and bridge construction. Others are hemmed-in by massive coastal mountain ranges. They certainly display characteristics of islands, however they are not technically islands so I have not included them on the list. The most notable example was arguably Juneau. More than 30,000 people live in Juneau, it&#8217;s the capital city of Alaska, and yet it remains unconnected to the external road network. Juneau is located on the mainland, not an island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Doubly Disconnected!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m particularly fond of double-disconnected islands. Those are rare places where a traveler would need to take <em>two<\/em> ferries to get there. These are islands connected overland only by ferry to an island that is connected only by ferry to the mainland. I found some examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rock Island<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d179244.7868308469!2d-86.9596904447403!3d45.41539298760373!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4d4ce2ca7d715a17%3A0x189d5a38315d6f05!2sRock%20Island!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1576959910458!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rock Island, a Wisconsin state park, can be accessed only from Washington Island by ferry, which in turn is accessed from the tip of the Door Peninsula by ferry. I&#8217;ve set foot on Washington Island (<a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21831\">my visit<\/a>) although I didn&#8217;t have time to reach Rock Island because it was a day trip by bicycle. Rock Island remains on my short list of places I&#8217;d like to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Revillagigedo Island<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ketchiikan Alaska on Revillagigedo Island provides access to the other two examples. One is rather extensive with several settlements, Prince of Whales Island. The other is Gravina Island where Ketchiikan&#8217;s airport is located, and which 12MC <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=10015\">discussed previously<\/a>. It&#8217;s most notorious for the proposed but derailed &#8220;Bridge to Nowhere.&#8221; People wouldn&#8217;t reasonably take two ferries to get to Gravina Island. They&#8217;d simply fly-in to the airport. However, the double-ferry route is technically feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: Chappaquiddick Island also fits the definition, accessible by ferry from Martha&#8217;s Vineyard. <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=15968\">I rode that ferry<\/a> in 2015!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and the Puget Sound islands in Washington might also count although I put them into a lesser category because they&#8217;re placed in strings along a longer ferry route. Interceding islands serve as layovers. A traveler doesn&#8217;t need to disembark and transfer to a different ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of islands requiring ferries surprised me in a couple of different ways. I thought there would be fewer examples and I thought Alaska would dominate the list even more than it did. I&#8217;ve taken 9 of the island routes personally: Beaver; Chappaquiddick; Dry Tortugas; Madeline; Ocracoke; Ship; Tangier; Vinalhaven and Washington.
