It is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backyardchickens.com\/threads\/chicken-scratch-vs-chicken-feed.64616\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a type of chicken feed<\/a> that&#8217;s typically strewn upon the ground. Chickens then scratch around the dirt in pursuit of feed, leaving claw marks behind. I suppose illegible handwriting might be thought to resemble the results of hungry chickens foraging for cracked grains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m much more interested in intact footprints though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t even try to make sense of 12MC today. I&#8217;m fixated on geographic features named Chicken Foot at the moment, and I don&#8217;t know why. Maybe the sheer absurdity attracts me. Behold the complete compendium of every Chicken Foot place name listed in the U.S. Geological Survey&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geographic Names Information System -GNIS<\/a>. I guarantee that this list has never been compiled and presented to the public before, and undoubtedly for good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These geographic features extend throughout the nation with a particular concentration in the southern states. I have provided the exact Lat\/Long coordinates recorded in GNIS in some of the map links to prove that I&#8217;m not making these up. Many can&#8217;t be found by name on the usual Internet mapping tools because of their obscurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chickenfoot-park\">Chickenfoot Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d6097.647506294552!2d-74.87673592570032!3d40.1684776660498!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89c1517da340d357%3A0xc5813ecf67050497!2sChickenfoot%20Park%2C%20Levittown%2C%20PA%2019057!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1604923780561!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the residents of Middletown Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania must have been embarrassed by Chickenfoot Park. They didn&#8217;t even include it in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middletownbucks.org\/Departments\/Parks-Recreation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of parks<\/a>. Bucks County didn&#8217;t want much to do with it either. They operate the adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buckscounty.org\/government\/ParksandRecreation\/Sites\/OxfordValleyGolf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxford Valley park<\/a> with its golf course and swimming pool. I can only speculate that Chickenfoot didn&#8217;t convey an image they wished to portray so they dropped it. We know better. They can&#8217;t hide from their heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chicken-foot-lake\">Chicken Foot Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d5617.673210345181!2d-88.61835297496077!3d45.25109676952535!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4d534328ff92be65%3A0xfd7f90e361768588!2sChicken%20Foot%20Lake!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1604924048878!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, folks in Wisconsin don&#8217;t seem to mind Chicken Foot Lake. Maybe early residents ran out of names. What else would account for nearby Chicken Crop Lake and Deadman Lake. Chicken Foot doesn&#8217;t sound so bad when compared to lakes named for an element of a chicken&#8217;s digestive system or someone deceased. Chicken Foot Lake also bears a vague resemblance to a chicken foot so it&#8217;s not completely illogical. Maybe? Just a little? In a Rorschach Test way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/21328105@N06\/5578491454\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5069\/5578491454_6c97bed4be_o.jpg\" alt=\"chicken feet. Photo by marywasadj; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Scratch THIS!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I still can&#8217;t believe I found a chicken foot photo with a Creative Commons license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chicken-foot-ridge\">Chicken Foot Ridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d13107.44512757966!2d-86.04929127534768!3d34.78426731001063!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8861ecc4fc2a158d%3A0x33b28d59eef00d8a!2sChicken%20Foot%20Ridge!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1604924285636!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alabama&#8217;s Chicken Foot Ridge does indeed appear talon-like and forms somewhat of a foot when combined with other nearby ridges. Squint a little and the shape will appear. This site also includes an adjacent feature called Chicken Foot Cove (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/JvzQEPERdgT5g8nD8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). In this context &#8220;cove&#8221; refers to a recess in the side of a mountain rather than the more familiar watery version. I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;ve ever seen cove used in this context before so this was a memorable find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alabama scores an additional time with Chicken Foot Mountain (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/pqZFSQBBP6WJoZrA6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) and wins bonus points for being part of an animal menagerie here, with adjacent Turkey Creek, Cattail pond and the renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadsideamerica.com\/tip\/35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rock Zoo<\/a>. It&#8217;s practically Old MacDonald&#8217;s Farm out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"even-more-chicken-feet\">Even More Chicken Feet!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3169.6039634712906!2d-118.75523953529542!3d37.39919714145262!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8095f73ac8be1d39%3A0x2a06bd16ed78f28f!2sChickenfoot%20Lake!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1604925065707!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining Chicken Foot features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Chickenfoot Lake, California (above) &#8212; probably the most remarkable resemblance to an actual chicken foot<\/li><li>Chickenfoot Creek, South Carolina (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/HFZV7BZnScn54Cya6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>); and<\/li><li>Chickenfoot Hollow, Kentucky (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/QTFsc2jBRPoNBiYX8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, I found a musical group called Chickenfoot composed of members of various other popular groups that I was blissfully unaware of until I started searching for geographic features. Ditto for a derisive term for a Peace Sign symbol. Google pointed those out to me. I mentioned those so nobody would feel obliged to comment on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"not-exactly-a-worldwide-phenomenon\">Not Exactly a Worldwide Phenomenon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t find any Chicken Foot locations in any other parts of the world. Canada, however, came close with a different anatomical area: Chicken&#8217;s Neck Mountain and adjacent Chicken&#8217;s Neck Ecological Preserve in British Columbia (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/EnYr1kTiWzPDqi6e8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best the United Kingdom could manage was Chickenley in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. I might describe that as &#8220;like a chicken&#8221; as in &#8220;his chickenley behavior seemed rather peculiar.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chickenley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia noted<\/a> without attribution I might add, that &#8220;<em>The Chickenley name could derive from a family name originating during early settlement, corrupted to &#8216;chicken&#8217; over the years<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/XV1JtyKvYMqLwNA49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).&#8221; Perhaps.
