By &#8220;pressing&#8221; I mean of importance to me naturally, because the questions that press upon my mind are rather simplistic. Maybe you are feeling a little curious too. Can someone drive from London to Reykjav\u00edk?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preposterous, the great Internet hordes scoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London and Reykjav\u00edk are located on widely separated islands. There\u2019s no bridge that covers anywhere near the 1,897 kilometers (1,179 miles, 1,024 nautical miles, take your pick) distance between these two capital cities. True enough. However, ferryboats make that journey possible. Yes, of course I\u2019m cheating with that answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Fly When You Can Take a Ferry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/16633132@N04\/44081018155\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1968\/44081018155_2f6ce94e65_b.jpg\" alt=\"Norrona _MG_0323. Photo by Ronnie Robertson; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>The Smyril Line&#8217;s Norr\u00f6na<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it makes better sense to fly to Iceland and rent a car at the Keflav\u00edk airport is immaterial. <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/#iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I\u2019ve flown to Iceland<\/a> multiple times and that\u2019s the way I\u2019d do it, but I recognize that other people have different motivations. Perhaps our unnamed tourist really, really likes her own automobile. Maybe she can\u2019t stand the thought of driving with a steering wheel on the opposite side. Perhaps she needs an assistive device not commonly found on rental cars. Like a breathalyzer. Whatever. It doesn\u2019t matter. The important point is that she can transport her personal automobile from Britain to Iceland using the public road system combined with regularly-scheduled ferry services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=19lzkPjOToF5QwuACZD6I9d76owI&amp;hl=en\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Get to Denmark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step involves a voyage from Britain to continental Europe. Plenty of options exist and numerous companies provide convenient car ferry service across the English Channel. Denmark is the goal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfds.com\/en-gb\/passenger-ferries\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DFDS Seaways<\/a> provides a nice option between Harwich and Esbjerg, Denmark. Cheaper possibilities also exist for shorter distances across water if one doesn\u2019t mind then driving up from France, Belgium or the Netherlands to arrive in Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Options narrow from this point forward. Actually there\u2019s only one possible option and the necessary stars line-up maybe once a week during the best times of year: the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smyrilline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smyril Line<\/a>. It departs either from Esbjerg or Hanstholm, Denmark depending on condition and timeframe. So\u2026 our fictional traveler could eliminate continental driving entirely with some upfront planning via Esbjerg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Onward to the Faroe Islands, then Iceland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From there the ferry Norr\u00f6na beats a path towards T\u00f3rshavn in the Faroe Islands, an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark. Our adventurous traveler would remain aboard the Norr\u00f6na while calling on port and would then continue onward through the North Atlantic bound for Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, a small village on the eastern Icelandic coast. From here our traveler would catch the Ring Road and roll down to Reykjav\u00edk to the southwest. She has made it to Iceland safely with her car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This used to be easier back when the Smyril Line operated regular service between Scrabster, Scotland and the Faroe Islands. That route has been discontinued for the 2009 sailing season due to the economy. However, it\u2019s still possible to get to Iceland by the more circuitous route outlined above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A New Compilation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If I\u2019m spending all this time describing ferries, then regular readers have probably already guessed that I\u2019ve completed yet another one of my insanely detailed ferry maps (because I&#8217;d have to be insane to go to this level of detail). That is indeed the case. I\u2019d like to introduce the newest addition to my growing collection: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/britain_and_ireland_ferry_map.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ferries of the British Islands and the Republic of Ireland<\/a>. This one almost did me in so I think I\u2019ll take a break from these for awhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I never would have imagined that I\u2019d document nearly 250 different ferry lines in such a small geographic area. Each one had to be researched, documented, geo-coded and loaded by hand into an xml file. It took months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact if you go back into my blog archive you will find a story I posted last December about <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=700\">the most remote town in mainland Britain<\/a>. It mentioned a ferry. I uncovered that story while researching the beginnings of the latest map. That\u2019s how long I\u2019ve been working on this.
