{"id":12584,"date":"2013-02-05T20:36:13","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T01:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=12584"},"modified":"2022-04-05T06:39:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T11:39:31","slug":"practically-insignificant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/practically-insignificant\/","title":{"rendered":"Practically Insignificant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I was pondering the nature of individual U.S. counties recently as I was going through the somewhat tedious process to <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12569\">create my 100th meridian map<\/a>. My mind began to wonder. There are urban counties, suburban counties and rural counties. Every once in awhile, however, there will be an individual county that has a size or a shape that transcends those categories. A place known primarily for a well-known city may stretch far enough geographically to hide some extremely rural areas in remote corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I featured one such instance awhile back in a article I called <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=10421\">Would You Believe?<\/a> when I posted an empty patch of Los Angeles. The series of images featured below follows a similar theme although I&#8217;m not trying to play any slight-of-hand tricks or fool anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first considered the unusual nature of Monroe County, Florida. Let&#8217;s head on over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monroe County, Florida<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is Monroe County:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8860837750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2870\/8860837750_04dc43d713_b.jpg\" alt=\"Mallory Square; Key West,Florida. It includes the long, narrow string of the Florida Keys. However, it also includes a large chunk of the Everglades. Geographically, the overwhelming preponderance of land in Monroe County can be found on the Florida mainland. Much of it is a swamp. Conversely, the large preponderance of people in Monroe live on all those small islands know as the Keys. I scoured Google satellite images until I found a lone residence as far removed from the county seat of Key West as possible (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/CGeMjjV3mrwLQFxb7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d1848997.9866455644!2d-81.077063!3d25.158529!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x88da3d1c9c98c30b%3A0x60f7f80d7b8c0a54!2sCounty%20Rd%2094%2C%20Ochopee%2C%20FL%2034141!3m2!1d25.7544462!2d-80.97810899999999!4m5!1s0x88d1b134ad952377%3A0x3fcee92f77463b5e!2sKey%20West%2C%20Florida%2033040!3m2!1d24.5550593!2d-81.7799871!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1614953948509!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How much attention do you thing the county&#8217;s elected officials give to someone so remotely located from the political center of power? It would take a resident living at this spot nearly four hours and 186 miles (300 km) to drive to the county seat, at least according to the conservative projections of Google Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">King County, Washington<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is King County:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/aon\/2620665233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3138\/2620665233_2e5e550d45_b.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle skyline. Photo by angela n.; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Seattle Skyline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But so is this:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1614954530805!6m8!1m7!1spz3zd8QIw5VcS7hOCp2-EA!2m2!1d47.73590410520372!2d-121.4257136996498!3f32.34!4f5.209999999999994!5f0.8160813932612223\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I noticed the urban-rural dichotomy in King County, Washington when I <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11194\">stopped at Snoqualmie Falls<\/a> last summer. There are more than 600,000 residents in Seattle, which is King County&#8217;s largest city (and many more than that in its suburbs). Seattle dwarfs the considerably more isolated communities in King&#8217;s farthest reaches such as <a href=\"https:\/\/skykomishwa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skykomish<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ED7sJJ5CwV77TJFY6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skykomish residents comprise only 198 of the 2,000,000 people who live in King County. The town is also a practical exlave. Roads exit to neighboring Snohomish or Chelan only, with none connecting them directly to the rest of King. They&#8217;re not completely ignored by the county government, however. They do have a <a href=\"https:\/\/kcls.org\/location\/skykomish-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">branch of the public library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orleans Parish, Louisiana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is Orleans Parish:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8844512735\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3748\/8844512735_d9236da7b1_b.jpg\" alt=\"New Orleans viewed from the Algiers Ferry. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>St. Louis Cathedral; New Orleans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But so is this:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1614954827592!6m8!1m7!1s5sWpoqBxaYPlK9IpY_O34w!2m2!1d30.14192683080799!2d-89.75057124603492!3f180!4f2.450000000000003!5f0.8160813932612223\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t look much like New Orleans. Nonetheless it&#8217;s a part of Orleans Parish. It sits along a narrow strip of land hemmed-in between the farthest eastern reach of Lake Pontchartrain and the western edge of Lake Borgne, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orleans is a consolidated city-parish. That means that people who live along this isolated spit (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/q6gdeozofyGG3Kp66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) are every bit as much a part of the City of New Orleans as those fronting on Bourbon Street, just without the walk-up windows for beer and hurricanes or the Mardi Gras shenanigans. They also don&#8217;t require the same level of police presence either so maybe it&#8217;s not always such a bad thing to have some distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allegheny County, Pennsylvania<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is Allegheny County:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/34527457800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4226\/34527457800_9e9e0cdbc5_b.jpg\" alt=\"Pittsburgh skyline. However, this spot definitely does not resemble Pittsburgh although it shares a common county. These farther-flung residents (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/vhShdLNa7Qi3gHAC9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) have little in common with their urban brethren except for possibly their fanaticism for the Steelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are certainly numerous instances of small handfuls of people in far-removed areas of jurisdictions with little in common with their fellow citizens.
