I decided to follow the example of Steve of Connecticut Museum Quest who featured his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctmuseumquest.com\/?page_id=20572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2012 Top Comments<\/a>. It seemed like an interesting twist, focusing on the audience rather than the articles. So in the time-honored tradition of bloggers everywhere I stole his idea blatantly and unabashedly. It&#8217;s OK. I told him I was going to lift it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I ran into the same dilemma Steve faced. I read every comment posted during the year and that took a long time. Unfortunately I hadn&#8217;t realized or fully appreciated the volume and quality of the input you provided. It took hours, a classic &#8220;nice problem to have.&#8221; It was also quite a remarkable body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t receive as many oddball comments as Steve gets on his more general-interest website. That&#8217;s good from a quality perspective, however that also means I don&#8217;t have any oddballs to highlight at the end of the year. Well, by definition those who appreciate geo-oddities are probably oddballs, but that doesn&#8217;t necessarily make any of us candidates for tinfoil hats. Comments were sane, rational and pertinent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most Activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Articles offering little puzzles generated the most comments. That&#8217;s to be expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>27 comments: <a href=\"\/blog\/short-distance-namesakes\/\">Short Distance Namesakes<\/a>, posted quite recently.<\/li><li>24 comments: <a href=\"\/blog\/longest-google-maps-route\/\">Longest Google Maps Route<\/a><\/li><li>23 comments: <a href=\"\/blog\/busy-days\/\">Busy Days<\/a> (number of states that could be visited in a single day)<\/li><li>21 comments: <a href=\"\/blog\/pronounced-how\/\">Pronounced How?<\/a> (counterintuitive regional pronunciations)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d also like to recognize Jon Persky before we get into the meat of the comments. He wrote a <a href=\"\/blog\/shortest-48\/\">guest article<\/a> as he pondered the shortest road distance between all 48 contiguous United States plus the District of Columbia. I feature about one guest article per year and this year it was Jon. I&#8217;m always thrilled to publish guest articles by the way &#8212; it doesn&#8217;t have to be once per year. Let me know if you have a burning geo-oddity idea that&#8217;s too large to fit into a tag-along comment and I&#8217;ll be happy to let you expand it into the ultimate comment, a guest article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspiration<strong><br><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8818737034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5457\/8818737034_1263ac5af7_b.jpg\" alt=\"Wild ponies viewed while boating through Assateague Bay, on a circuit around Chincoteague Island. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Chincoteague Wild Pony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes effort and ingenuity to motivate me to actually do something because I&#8217;m inherently lazy. Several comments managed to hit that almost impossibly high mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Philip Sites (of the <a href=\"https:\/\/weekendroady.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weekend Roady<\/a> website) inspired me to <a href=\"\/blog\/chincoteague-assateague\/#comment-4573\">take the family to Chincoteague<\/a> for a long weekend.<\/li><li>Marc showed me where I could <a href=\"\/blog\/around-bend\/#comment-4333\">pump my own gas<\/a> in Oregon.<\/li><li>Page&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/latitude-longitude-sequences\/#comment-4371\">comment<\/a> led to my <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11904\">Arizona Strip<\/a> article.<\/li><li>John of Sydney&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/captains-less-prestigious\/#comment-4474\">comment<\/a> brought <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11883\">Captain Thunderbolt<\/a> to my attention.<\/li><li>Jonathan Schlesinger&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/first-name-surname-symmetry\/#comment-3982\">comment<\/a> led to <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12059\">Joe<\/a> Montana. <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=12081\">Twice<\/a>!<\/li><li>pfly&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/bill-williams\/#comment-2726\">comment<\/a>, although left in 2011, led to a John Day <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=10965\">article<\/a> <em>and<\/em> my personal <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11210\">visit<\/a> to the John Day Fossil Beds in 2012.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A related topic I call &#8220;reverse inspiration&#8221; probably fits here as a subcategory too. That&#8217;s where 12MC inspired someone to take a specific action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I started noticing a weird spike in website traffic originating from Cameroon, a place not noted for 12MC visitors. <a href=\"\/blog\/rare-visitors\/#comment-4283\">It was Lyn<\/a> who was in Cameroon on business and knew I&#8217;d appreciate the pings. And I did! I encourage anyone in the audience to do the same whenever traveling to a remote destination. I will definitely notice the surge because I check weblogs daily and obsess over tantalizing anomalies<\/li><li>Matthew has never watched the television show COPS. He nonetheless documented a visit to 132 and Bush in Portland, Oregon, and <a href=\"\/blog\/bad-boys-revisited\/\">sent photographs<\/a>. I got to meet Matthew later in the year in person while in Washington state so that was another 12MC highlight.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wisdom of the Crowd<strong><br><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/47987646532\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/47987646532_1158f16ace_b.jpg\" alt=\"An early morning bike ride along the Potomac River. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>FYI: the Potomac River isn&#8217;t in Oregon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can uncover only so much information as an armchair writer. I&#8217;ve learned the wider 12MC audience almost always knows the answer when I&#8217;m stumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Craig surmised that <a href=\"\/blog\/nationalistic-surnames\/#comment-4633\">the surname Austria<\/a> was Filipino<\/li><li>Dave Carroll discovered the source of the weird <a href=\"\/blog\/potomac-in-oregon\/#comment-3827\">Potomac River in Oregon<\/a> queries.<\/li><li>Brian Casey clued me in that <a href=\"\/blog\/canada-mexico\/#comment-4583\">others already knew<\/a> the most efficient paths across the United States.<\/li><li>January First-of-May; will find <a href=\"\/blog\/longest-google-maps-route\/#comment-4445\">the ultimate solution<\/a> to just about any puzzle I post, returning multiple times with increasingly elegant solutions. This also provided a source of a steady stream of 12MC visits from Russia as a happy byproduct.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Odd Facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d3024.8855138223144!2d-74.041178!3d40.69851900000001!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1585611231743!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" aria-hidden=\"false\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s the difference between and Odd Fact and the Wisdom of the Crowd? I don&#8217;t have a clue. It&#8217;s a fine line. Some of these are interesting observations that I enjoyed immensely that may not have much greater practical significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rhodent&#8217;s wife has <a href=\"\/blog\/numerical-irrelevance\/#comment-4691\">a UK telephone number<\/a> even though she works from the US.<\/li><li>Mr. Burns <a href=\"\/blog\/north-south\/#comment-4665\">noted<\/a> that Easton, Kansas is in Eastern Kansas and Weston, Missouri is in Western Missouri, and they&#8217;re only about 12 miles apart.<\/li><li>Drake informed us that Lansing, Michigan was <a href=\"\/blog\/state-capital-surnames\/#comment-4644\">founded by a scam artist<\/a>.<\/li><li>Dominique M. <a href=\"\/blog\/gephyrophobia\/#comment-4605\">discovered a solution<\/a> for those who fear ferries and bridges that would turn a 40 minute routine drive into a 59 hour adventure.<\/li><li>Ken once traveled through <a href=\"\/blog\/capitals-aligned\/#comment-4518\">four state capital cities<\/a> in a single day for a work-related trip.<\/li><li>Bill Harris referenced a portion of the Erie Canal that later became part of the <a href=\"\/blog\/abandoned-canals-canada\/#comment-4500\">Rochester, NY subway<\/a> system. This one may become a future 12MC article so keep an eye on it.<\/li><li>Scott knew about perhaps the <a href=\"\/blog\/infrequent-crossings-us-canada\/#comment-4294\">least used<\/a> legal crossing between Canada and the United States, a place called Goat Haunt.<\/li><li>Steve of the previously-mentioned CTMQ told what happened when <a href=\"\/blog\/mardela-delmar\/#comment-4220\">automobile accidents occurred<\/a> directly atop a specific state boundary. Hint: it sometimes involved a coin toss.<\/li><li>Ian referenced a completely bizarre situation where someone would have to travel <a href=\"\/blog\/semi-practical-exclaves-galore\/#comment-3970\">through three different counties<\/a> to get home, every time.<\/li><li>Chris noted that it&#8217;s easy to cross from New York to New Jersey from every cardinal direction on dry land. The only thing required is a <a href=\"\/blog\/all-cardinal-directions\/#comment-4219\">visit to Ellis Island<\/a>.<\/li><li>I can&#8217;t add anything to Philip Sites amazing <a href=\"\/blog\/license-map\/#comment-4027\">license plate geo-trivia<\/a>: &#8220;it\u2019s Montana state law to feature the state outline on any plate design.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amusing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d25010.003816140896!2d-75.084!3d38.412576000000016!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1585611494913!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" aria-hidden=\"false\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes I just had to smile. Some comments may not have added significantly to the larger body of world knowledge, however, they increased the entertainment value of 12MC!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>James D. mentioned that the <a href=\"\/blog\/creative-marketing\/#comment-4659\">mayor of Eu, France<\/a> comes dangerously close to being a French obscenity.<\/li><li>Joshua D. claimed tongue-in-cheek that the shortest Atlantic to Pacific distance was <a href=\"\/blog\/atlantic-pacific\/#comment-4683\">one block<\/a>.<\/li><li>Peter gets a special mention for understanding my dueling high-brow \/ low-brow dichotomy by working <a href=\"\/blog\/nationalistic-surnames\/#comment-4639\">Octomom<\/a> into a perfectly pertinent comment.<\/li><li>Fritz Keppler amused us with the <a href=\"\/blog\/chincoteague-assateague\/#comment-4602\">unfortunately-named<\/a> Assawoman Bay.<\/li><li>Greg commented on the <a href=\"\/blog\/barron-county-grid\/#comment-4551\">Metric System<\/a>: &#8220;My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead, and that\u2019s the way I likes it!&#8221;<\/li><li>David F-H wishes to <a href=\"\/blog\/barron-county-grid\/#comment-4549\">design a GPS unit<\/a> that I will undoubtedly purchase. It will count in units of counties.<\/li><li>Dale Sanderson thought we should be careful of <a href=\"\/blog\/subterranean-continental-divide\/#comment-3953\">people from Denver<\/a>.<\/li><li>Craig called-out Leadville for <a href=\"\/blog\/highest-town-usa\/#comment-4348\">ridiculous exaggeration<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Basement Geographer (his <a href=\"http:\/\/basementgeographer.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>) gets either first place or last place for the <a href=\"\/blog\/bridge-wisconsin-michigan\/#comment-4520\">groaner of the year<\/a>. He felt compelled to post the comment even though he hated doing it, which feels completely rational to me.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obligatory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Flag_of_Canada.svg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/cf\/Flag_of_Canada.svg\" alt=\"Flag of Canada. Created by  E Pluribus Anthony \/ User:Mzajac, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I could always count on Brent to wave the maple-leaf flag <a href=\"\/blog\/capitals-on-edge\/#comment-4539\">upon request<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeing You in Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Twelve Mile Circle has allowed me to met many like-minded geo-geeks, generally on the Intertubes although sometimes in person. I already mentioned meeting Matthew last Summer. There were a couple of other occasions when that happened last year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We held an <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=10127#happy\">American Meridian Happy Hour<\/a> in January. I think we might have to do that again. I can&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s been almost a year.<\/li><li>Steve of CTMQ invited me along on my <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11310\">Craziest Geo-Oddity Adventure Ever<\/a>. I continue to believe we accomplished a specific feat for the first time in human history, absent evidence to the contrary.<br><hr><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several 2012 comments may lead to 2013 (or beyond) accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Peter said that if I join the Shore Line Trolley Museum in Connecticut they&#8217;ll let me <a href=\"\/blog\/locomotive-engineer\/#comment-4529\">operate the railcards<\/a>.<\/li><li>Greg let me know that &#8220;<a href=\"\/blog\/12mc-social-networking\/#comment-3592\">TheReal12MC<\/a>&#8221; would be a great Twitter account (it was still available as of this morning).<\/li><li>Mr. Burns will <a href=\"\/blog\/mainly-marathons\/#comment-4393\">save me from a faux pas<\/a> when I undertake my crazy five-state adventure in March.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you, everyone, for a great 2012.
