Frank Sinatra arrived in this world in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobokennj.org\/\">Hoboken<\/a>, New Jersey in 1915, not New York City, and he lived his first couple of decades there including his formative years as a performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Now I can&#8217;t get that blasted song out of my head.  Maybe you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aqlJl1LfDP4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turn it on<\/a> in the background and join me.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hoboken&#8217;s Favorite Export<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1642767784494!6m8!1m7!1sa-UTtHi6iEOGthncWk11bA!2m2!1d40.74527763947535!2d-74.02276082418199!3f73.49049972470236!4f11.944771319985122!5f0.7820865974627469\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fine residents of Hoboken don&#8217;t want anyone to forget that point. They don&#8217;t want to be overshadowed by their rivals directly across the Hudson River either.  Sinatra remains <em>their son<\/em> despite what the song may imply.  I&#8217;m pretty sure I had a general awareness of the Hoboken connection. Nonetheless, it didn&#8217;t have much meaning to me until I noticed Frank Sinatra Drive (above) and the park of the same name that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/frank-sinatra-park-hoboken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">runs along its edge<\/a> while updating my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/united_states_ferry_map.html\">United States Ferry Map<\/a>.<sup>(<a href=\"#footnote\">1<\/a>)<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Also Vegas!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Places other than Hoboken also claimed a slice of the Frank Sinatra legacy.  Las Vegas, Nevada also intertwined with him quite tightly.  Unsurprisingly, Sin City played homage to the crooner through a broad avenue hugging the eastern edge of Interstate 15, paralleling the western side of the Las Vegas Strip.  It provides easy backdoor access to many of the famous Vegas Strip casinos including of course <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorknewyork.mgmresorts.com\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York New York<\/a>.  I guess that makes sense too.  Once again, Frank Sinatra can be found just to the west of New York.  Hoboken tips its hat to its friends in Nevada for geographical accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3223.6499275043507!2d-115.18144028533612!3d36.102020814387835!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x80c8c42d19a8882f%3A0x7069681f46436e5d!2sFrank%20Sinatra%20Dr%2C%20Paradise%2C%20NV!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1599826843535!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice how Dean Martin Drive hugs the other side of I-15 and then crosses beneath the interstate to join Frank Sinatra Drive?  They join and become Industrial Drive.  Vegas saw a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2011\/aug\/27\/push-change-streets-name-sammy-davis-jr-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">push to change Industrial Drive to Sammy Davis Jr. Parkway<\/a>&#8221; as recently as 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> &#8220;If the Davis name change is approved, he would join a growing list of Strip entertainers whose names grace the valley street signs: Elvis Presley Court, Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Debbie Reynolds Drive, Jerry Lewis Way, Mel Torme Way, Wayne Newton Boulevard and Roy Horn Way.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know whether this effort will succeed although the proposal garnered support and began fundraising to pay for signage.  It would be great cosmic justice to reunite the three leading members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rat_Pack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rat Pack<\/a> in Vegas, even figuratively.  The intersection seems otherwise unremarkable on its own merits (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/NDfwAiGRHTLAe9xx6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street view<\/a>) and could use some improvements or at least a little notoriety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[<strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: Sammy Davis Jr. Dr., now exists (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2o3VdeJaHGrrvEn2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>)]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Forget Rancho Mirage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d685.5457936978651!2d-116.430799!3d33.772804!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1599827415170!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally Sinatra had an association with Rancho Mirage, California where he lived in &#8220;The Compound&#8221; [<em>link no longer works<\/em>]. He resided at 70588 Frank Sinatra Drive, along a fairway of the Tamarisk Country Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> &#8220;Sinatra built this sprawling 2.5 acre residence in 1954 to include a main house, movie theatre, five guest houses, an actual train caboose turned into a barbershop and sauna, two swimming pools, tennis courts, and a personal art studio. Each building was named after one of his songs: New York, New York, High Hopes, The Tender Trap, Send In the Clowns, Chicago, and My Way.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This period coincided with the golden age of Palm Springs at the midpoint of the Twentieth Century. Movie stars and entertainment legends of the time gathered in the desert east of Hollywood. They drank, caroused, golfed and sometimes even relaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Around the World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Various roads named for Frank Sinatra span the globe. They offer no discernible connection to his legacy beyond a simple memorial placed by appreciative fans.  I found Frank Sinatra Place in El Paso, Texas (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/tHX62nPmv9GpkwV39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) along with various other tribute streets (Cheryl Ladd?  Really?).  Frank Sinatra also lives on in a trailer park in Mesa, Arizona (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2mCSM4t852CXus2s6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The community paired with Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, but also with Marilyn Monroe and Mae West (shortened erroneously by the map bots at Google to &#8220;May W.&#8221; I uncovered both with just a few minutes of searching.  There must be considerably more Sinatra this-that-or-the-other detritus scattered about the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d2618.9139189088028!2d9.279514!3d48.974163!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4799cd3e7f604bfd%3A0x9e013bb5b147290b!2sFrank-Sinatra-Stra%C3%9Fe%2C%2071711%20Steinheim%20an%20der%20Murr%2C%20Germany!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1599827825609!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International tributes reveal themselves too.  I think I&#8217;m partial to Frank-Sinatra-Stra\u00dfe, in Steinheim an der Murr, Germany. There he keeps good company with John Lennon, George Harrison, Louis Armstrong and Janis Joplin plus a raft of classical music composers.  Rua Frank Sinatra in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil probably comes in a close second (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/UW6JepbfGi4VKrhn7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). His partners include Martin Luther King and Che Guevara.  Frank Sinatra, Martin Luther King and Che Guevara would have been a much more interesting Rat Pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sounds like the setup for a bad joke:  &#8220;<em>Frank Sinatra, Martin Luther King and Che Guevara walk into a bar&#8230;<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12MC Love Footnotes!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><font size=\"1\"><a name=\"footnote\"><\/a><sup>(1)<\/sup> I always reserve the most onerous chores for the holidays when I can put some concentrated hours and effort into them.  I&#8217;ve finally started updating from v2 to v3 of Google&#8217;s JavaScript Maps API.  Yes, I know, I should have done that a couple of years ago.  That would have required effort and energy so instead I procrastinated until Google sent me a reminder saying that they could pull the support plug as soon as May 2013. <\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font size=\"1\">This ferry page is my initial v3 prototype and I still have some link checking to complete and such.  I&#8217;m not happy with the bass-ackwards way I had to code it so maybe I&#8217;ll come up with a more elegant scripting effort later.  Whatever.  It&#8217;ll work for now and it buys me some more time.  I can kick-the-can down the road just like the best politicians.  Those of you that have been begging for better NYC ferry coverage also get your wish.  That was a complete freaking nightmare.  Don&#8217;t expect anything fancy either.  I know that ferries don&#8217;t cross overland through the tip of Manhattan.<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><font size=\"1\"><br> <a name=\"footnote2\"><\/a><sup>(2)<\/sup>  I&#8217;m not sure why I find it so funny.  In this instance shortening West to W. is completely inappropriate because West is a surname in this context rather than a cardinal direction.  I&#8217;d like to think it&#8217;s an Easter Egg placed by Google Maps although the stupid bot theory is considerably more likely.  Occam&#8217;s razor and such.
