That shouldn&#8217;t be an issue ordinarily although it looks very strange when the town falls within the boundaries of South Carolina, making it North, South Carolina. I swear I didn&#8217;t know about this video from &#8220;You Bet Your Life&#8221; before I found North on a map completely by accident. Give it a watch. The geography portion lasts until around the fourth minute and it&#8217;s pretty entertaining. I laughed more than a few times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;You Bet Your Life&quot; - Show 1039 - Bill Cosby - Marcia Brody\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8mIAGTTPuLw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The part about North being south of the South Carolina capital and southeast of Due West is priceless. Indeed, both are true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d1694258.7045357577!2d-81.744859!3d33.964294!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x88580620a8b8a547%3A0x53793b66cd1ab613!2sDue%20West%2C%20South%20Carolina%2029639!3m2!1d34.3334469!2d-82.387902!4m5!1s0x88f8dcf161ca4bfd%3A0xb93b6ecaa832cddc!2sNorth%2C%20South%20Carolina%2029112!3m2!1d33.6157083!2d-81.10204139999999!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1615663653774!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not That Far North<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:NorthWelcomeSign_SC.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/8\/89\/NorthWelcomeSign_SC.JPG\/1024px-NorthWelcomeSign_SC.JPG\" alt=\"NorthWelcomeSign SC. Photo by Efy96001. CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Welcome to North<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly the <a href=\"https:\/\/townofnorth.sc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Town of North<\/a> isn&#8217;t north. In fact, just eyeballing it, North appears to be very near the center of the state. Nonetheless the town seems to appreciate its unusual name and even uses the motto, &#8220;<em>All points lead to North, South Carolina<\/em>.&#8221; So what is going on here? Certainly it&#8217;s not about the geography of the location. I&#8217;m going to imagine that most readers have already figured out a plausible theory. Obviously, north is a surname and that is indeed the case here. As noted in the town history,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The Town of North was founded ~ as many small towns in South Carolina ~ as a result of the railroad. John F. North, George W. Pou, and Sampson A. Livingston donated 100 acres to create a rail depot and town on the South Bound Railroad Company&#8217;s new rail line. Mr. North was influential in bringing the railroad to the area, so the town is named after him ~ North, South Carolina.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That same webpage includes a photograph of a historical marker, also noting that John F. North was a Confederate veteran. That must have been an interesting situation. Imagine someone named North fighting for the South. He might have found himself on the receiving end of at least a little teasing or hazing. I guess it might be better than someone named Yankee or Lincoln, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And a Circle!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1knAM_k6eiZBHpP4fKIIgwqlfjJ4\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town shape also fascinates me for the obvious reason. North is primarily a circle with a diameter of exactly one mile. That shape occurs quite commonly in Georgia, one state farther to the south. I&#8217;m intrigued to uncover one in South Carolina. I&#8217;ll have to see if I can figure out whether this is common to the region or whether it&#8217;s a coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two knobs also become visible. Generally this happens later in the evolution of a town as it annexes adjacent parcels. The northern knob &#8212; which I suppose one could call northernmost North &#8212; seems to include a used car dealership. The eastern knob incorporates a few extra houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the large runway just outside of town. That&#8217;s the Air Force&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbcharleston.jb.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Article\/233010\/north-auxiliary-airfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Auxiliary Airfield<\/a>.&#8221; with a 12,000 foot runway. Compare that to the diameter of the town! It&#8217;s operated by the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron in support of &#8220;<em>C-17 Globemaster III aircrew training and proficiency training<\/em>.&#8221; C-17&#8217;s are very large airplanes used for military transport. The airfield isn&#8217;t one of the better-known facilities though. As the website notes, &#8220;<em>the only permanently assigned personnel at North Auxiliary Airfield are roughly one dozen firefighters and one civilian grounds keeper<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot more happening in North than I expected after spotting an oddly-named town along some random point on a map.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seemed like a typographical error, a town named North.
