That has happened a handful of times before on Twelve Mile Circle. However it&#8217;s rather infrequent. Here is the map that started my journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d618.3032989059184!2d-73.479998!3d40.705545!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1611576492337!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goliath Road in North Massapequa, New York stretches a brief block only to connect larger roads and provide an exit to four homes. It struck me as odd because the name simply doesn&#8217;t fit. It&#8217;s a classic oxymoron, the &#8220;jumbo shrimp&#8221; phenomenon. Imagine a puny road called Goliath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goliath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hebrew Bible account of Goliath describes an intimidating, gigantic, larger-than-life warrior. Why tag that name and all it conveys onto a road so diminutive? Maybe developers named it for the <em>vanquished<\/em> Goliath, the one that David bonked in the forehead with a rock before cutting off his head? That also seemed odd. I can&#8217;t imagine it would contribute positively to local real estate values. Who would want to move to Decapitation Street?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:071A.David_Slays_Goliath.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/00\/071A.David_Slays_Goliath.jpg\/1024px-071A.David_Slays_Goliath.jpg\" alt=\"071A.David Slays Goliath. Gustave Dor\u00e9, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><figcaption>David Slays Goliath &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustave_Dor%C3%A9\">Gustave Dor\u00e9<\/a> (1866)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I found an inordinate number of Goliath roads, streets and avenues throughout the English-speaking world. Some of those instances found in the United States included Goliath Road in Coldwater, MS (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/4jtbboTSL51sJvKp9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>), Milton, FL (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/WvpgrR1Vba6ebC8P9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) and Tomah, WI (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps?q=Goliath+Road,+Tomah,+WI&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=38.880816,-77.102156&amp;sspn=0.132828,0.308647&amp;oq=Goliath+rd.,+toma&amp;hnear=Goliath+Rd,+Tomah,+Monroe,+Wisconsin+54660&amp;t=m&amp;z=16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>); Goliath Lane in Mount Airy, NC (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Ui9jqF6UV4UPNnD16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>); and Goliath Dr. in Chugiak, AK (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/wicAGEQezi48vdB57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The one in Alaska also intersected with Sampson Drive (yes, with a &#8220;p&#8221;) and Delilah Circle to keep an Old Testaments subtext rolling. This would become a recurring theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, so many tiny residential roads named Goliath proved to me that the naming convention was a lot more common that I anticipated. That didn&#8217;t leave much room for an article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goliath With David<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I discovered that roads paired Goliath with David only on very rare occasions. That pushed the article away from the oxymoron theme towards a combo theme. I found the ability to stand at the intersection of David and Goliath strangely amusing. I hope I&#8217;m able to to that in person someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Florida<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d7056.443937122604!2d-80.484869!3d27.83371!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x88de69b3afe258ef%3A0xab7a41137255990b!2sGoliath%20Rd%20%26%20David%20Ln%2C%20Roseland%2C%20FL%2032958!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1611577355427!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebastian, Florida provided the first instance I discovered: David Lane and Goliath Road in the Shady Rest Mobile Home Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Queensland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m12!1m8!1m3!1d24920.28098943931!2d145.46731!3d-17.292872!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!2m1!1sDavid%20Street%20and%20Goliath%20Street%2C%20Carrington%2C%20Queensland%2C%20Australia!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1611577490982!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next I discovered an instance in Queensland, Australia. This one was located southwest of Cairns on the eastern edge of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hasties_Swamp_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hasties Swamp National Park<\/a>. Drill down and notice that a street grid and labels have been affixed to the map although most of the streets themselves do not seem to exist. Perhaps this represents a small housing development planned for the future and not yet built. It&#8217;s quite strange. I don&#8217;t have a suitable explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">England<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1611577692069!6m8!1m7!1sZ8cm3JD3iH_RGv3Rx1NpzQ!2m2!1d50.71672803595716!2d-2.017020738785488!3f142.82!4f0!5f0.8160813932612223\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite example occurred in Poole, England. An automobile barrier separates David Way from Goliath Road. That&#8217;s probably so the two can&#8217;t fight. This same community includes an intersection of Samson and Delilah Roads as well as a Solomon Way thrown in for good measure. Then, Hercules Road? I&#8217;m not sure why the developers suddenly shifted towards Roman mythology. Then again, little seems to make sense when it comes to naming roads. They probably ran out of ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Goliath Road appears in Coalville, Leicestershire (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dfreeE5uWshuXAcu6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) alas without David, although Samson made another appearance. Greek and Roman themes emerged as well with Atlas, Hector and Vulcan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">South Africa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, South Africa seemed to be the Goliath of the Goliath theme. I found probably close to ten Goliath roads or variations. None of them appeared to have been paired with David. Nonetheless I was amused by the one with the Pentecostal Church (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/RKbs5jN3RXWMYjCM7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>), thinking they could have located themselves on a street with a better Biblical association. It didn&#8217;t quite rise to the ultimate level of irony &#8212; they&#8217;d have to be found on Satan Way or something like that &#8212; so I&#8217;d categorize it more more as &#8220;huh&#8221; or &#8220;how &#8217;bout that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See you at David and Goliath?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had the unusual experience of starting an article in one direction and watching it detour along a different path as I typed.
