{"id":11403,"date":"2012-08-19T09:24:53","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T14:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=11403"},"modified":"2022-01-24T08:13:57","modified_gmt":"2022-01-24T13:13:57","slug":"named-for-captain-cook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/named-for-captain-cook\/","title":{"rendered":"Named for Captain Cook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This isn&#8217;t intended as <a href=\"https:\/\/adb.anu.edu.au\/biography\/cook-james-1917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a biography of Captain James Cook<\/a> although his voyages throughout the South Pacific and beyond were numerous and legendary. Rather this is about places named for Captain Cook, strewn about the waters in which he sailed and the shorelines that he charted. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.captaincooksociety.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an entire society<\/a> named for him if other aspects of his remarkable life interest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alaska<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d2040385.1383163412!2d-153.86690443191827!3d60.03888644644515!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x56c18d748a523eb7%3A0xc687fccd93ad6b49!2sCook%20Inlet!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1600613298084!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certainly I&#8217;d read about Captain Cook in history books as I went through school, however I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;d really though much about him since then. That&#8217;s not intended to dismiss his contributions as much as to note that I&#8217;d simply focused on other topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This began to change during my most recent trip to Alaska a couple of years ago. The preponderance of Alaskan residents and visitors alike can find a near-daily reminder of Cook&#8217;s legacy if they are attentive: Cook Inlet is the big arm of water connecting Anchorage to the Gulf of Alaska and the open sea. Indeed, &#8220;Anchorage&#8221; connotes a ship-friendly place where one could load and unload via Cook Inlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captain Cook didn&#8217;t discover Cook Inlet. The Dena&#8217;ina (Tanaina), an Athabascan people, already lived there for multiple millennia. He wasn&#8217;t even the first European to arrive. Russian fur traders beat him to the Alaskan coastline as well. Nonetheless Cook sailed into this specific body of water during his 1778 expedition while searching for the legendary Northwest Passage. Subsequent explorers named the inlet for Cook and the name stuck. Life works that way sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8831068128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5450\/8831068128_63c6448d33_b.jpg\" alt=\"Captain Cook State Recreation Area near Nikiski, Alaska. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Captain Cook State Recreation Area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That never would have registered on my mind either except that <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22474\">we visited<\/a> Captain Cook State Recreation Area on the inlet&#8217;s southern edge along the Kenai Peninsula. It finally resonated once I was slapped silly about the head with the name. Only then did it finally connect with my conscious. I don&#8217;t profess to be the brightest or most observant geo-geek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hawaii<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d60177.41631401693!2d-155.93007918417788!3d19.494827045236214!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x795406c8487722e1%3A0x1296f1d0ab999a67!2sCaptain%20Cook%2C%20HI!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1600613829703!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought it was interesting but I didn&#8217;t do much with the notion until a few days ago. That&#8217;s when I noticed a 12MC visitor landing on the website from Captain Cook, Hawaii. <em>Fascinating<\/em>. I&#8217;d never heard of it before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out to be a census-designated place (not formally a town) on the western side of the island of Hawaii, the Big Island. It is located along Kealakekua Bay. Captain Cook stopped there in 1779, upset the natives, and died after being clubbed about the head and stabbed. Thus ended the career of Captain James Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s fitting, I suppose, that a town would bear Captain Cook&#8217;s name here and that a monument would be erected in his honor nearby in <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiistateparks.org\/parks\/hawaii\/kealakekua-bay-state-historical-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park<\/a>. <em>Except the town isn&#8217;t named for him<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain. Yes, he was definitely the Captain Cook in question. There wasn&#8217;t some other Captain Cook traipsing around Hawaii in the Eighteenth Century sewing geographic confusion. The settlement was named in the early 1900&#8217;s for a post office at the Captain Cook Coffee Company. Therefore, technically the town was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_Cook,_Hawaii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">named for the coffee<\/a> that was named for the Captain. It would be like someone naming a town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capncrunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cap&#8217;n Crunch<\/a> because it happened to be co-located with the Quaker Oats Company. Well, maybe it&#8217;s not quite that bad but you get the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, the Captain Cook Coffee Co. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.captaincookkona.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still exists<\/a>: &#8220;<em>Captain Cook is one of the oldest existing coffee companies in Hawaii. Since the 1880\u2019s, Captain Cook has been growing and processing raw green Kona coffee<\/em>.&#8221; I wasn&#8217;t expecting that at all. I would have thought they&#8217;d be long gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d11426.66402722619!2d-124.12443007020354!3d44.275690429202925!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x54c193138db46641%3A0x63599fd0d0ed2438!2sCaptain%20Cook%20Point!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1600614154011!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other places named for the Captain. One is a point of land (&#8220;Captain Cook Point&#8221;) in Lane County, Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Captain Cook Point isn&#8217;t marked as such by Google Maps [<em>SEPT. 2020 UPDATE: it has since been added<\/em>]. However the coordinates are listed in the USGS Geographic Names Information System (<a href=\"http:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GNIS<\/a>) so it&#8217;s legitimate. I do see &#8220;Cooks Chasm&#8221; on Google Maps which lends it an additional air of credibility. Captain Cook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.captaincooksociety.com\/home\/detail\/the-coast-of-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotted nearby Cape Perpetua<\/a> in 1778 so he definitely sailed past this stretch of Oregon coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coincidences continue. I could have visited Captain Cook Point if I&#8217;d only explored the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=11298\">weird checkerboard<\/a> during my recent Oregon adventure. That&#8217;s another geo-oddity I can add to my long list of lost opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous-mentioned Captain Cook place names are all found within the United States. There are plenty of others located outside of the US, in and around and throughout the South Pacific:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookislands.gov.ck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cook Islands<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Lg9bfQKtNZ7kTsTPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) is the most obvious example: a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand.<\/li><li>Cook Strait (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/oqw9YyVWaXWr2dkP6\">map<\/a>): the narrow body of water separating New Zealand&#8217;s North and South Islands.<\/li><li>Cooktown, Queensland, Australia (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/4nnuM6qovVsng3X16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): near where Cook beached his ship in 1770 for repairs.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcu.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James Cook University<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/B5rY6iYxe9RQcBhx6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): a public university in Townsville, Queensland, Australia<\/li><li>Cook Crater (<a href=\"https:\/\/geohack.toolforge.org\/geohack.php?pagename=Cook_%28crater%29&amp;params=17.5_S_48.9_E_globe:Moon_type:landmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>): on the moon, yes the moon!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve enjoyed my little sailing adventure with Captain Cook this morning. This list of course is by no means all-inclusive; I have only so much time to write.
